I, too, have a G9 as a backup. It is great for general photography at ISO 80, but I do a lot of closeup work and that camera doesn't work well for me in those cases. I haven't noticed noise, but rather that it's very difficult to get the camera to focus closely.
I use RAW, as I would with any camera, and the RAW images that 'come out' all look very good. I wish I could get the camera to focus on a near subject so I wouldn't have to carry my EOS 5D and all the lenses, tripod, etc. (yes I'm lazy ;-) ), but for now I guess the G9 will be a 'fun' camera.
