You can be successfull in stock without having a large people portfolio but you have to think concepts. Have a look at some of the photos around and see what sells. Then try and think of creative ideas that would be usuable in a concept. I had a hard time starting out with people. Not because of the modelrelease issue, which I really don't find an issue, but once you start with people you'll be amazed at how many more people will be willing to pose for you! Try things as modelmayhem.com to get models that are willing to pose for ftp. And if you don't look people photography just find something that will work for you. One of my most successfull images is of people, but the next best one is an animal... A pig to be exact...:) So it's hard to predict sometimes what will sell and what will not! posted in Good selling portfolios without people in it.

I think also one thing to consider is that the requirements in the microstock industry in general have become of much higher standard then they were in the beginning. I own a Powershot G7 which is a fantastic little camera and works great for holidays when I don't want to carry around a ton of equipment. However; the shots I shoot with that camera are hardly ever good enough for stock. Not when I look at them at a 100%. The noise levels are much higher and generally the quality of my SLR is far more superior to the G7. But then again - after spending about four years in microstock - I've become ridiculously critical of my own stuff.... So it could be just me...:) More importantly then the camera though is which lens you use... You can have a great SLR but with a bad lens you might still get bad quality... Keep in mind though that cheap doesn't necessarily mean 'bad'. Just make sure you check reviews before buying! posted in Is DSLR camera a must?
