I did the same search and I see your point: Lots of images of red curtains. I don't know if this is indicative of problems with the new search, but you might try checking 'only vector/RAW' instead of 'illustrations' since you are looking for a vector. I did that and got better results.
Still, I agree with you, a search on 'illustrations' should produce more varied results, including 3D renders of movie theaters. posted in Question about the search engine

Since we were asked about whether to have a system which favors good-selling images or older portfolios, as an old-timer (here since 2005) I would benefit by the latter. However, I agree with Lisa and others that an image based system is better. It is fairer to everyone I think. Let each image be priced on its merits. posted in Price adjustments
