I seem to be getting artifacting when converting from 16bit RAW or TIF to 8bit JPG files. Are there any suggestions. I primarily use Lightroom but have also tried to convert files using other photo software and have some of the same issues. |

You shouldn't get any artifacting purely from the conversion you are doing, unless you are saving the JPG at less than maximum quality and then re-opening it.
Conversion from 16bit to 8bit rarely (if ever) produces a noticeable difference to the human eye, you're just losing that extra information which is invaluable when making level or curves adjustments, as I understand it. (I stand to be corrected by more technical peeps)
Generally, my workflow is to open 16bit RAW in Adobe Camera Raw, make colour adjustments then transfer to Photoshop, make retouching / cloning changes, convert to 8bit and save as JPG.
If you're seeing noticeable artifacting whilst using maximum quality JPGs then I would try changing your workflow and software... maybe you have a setting somewhere which is messing things up.

Thanks. I use Adobe Lightroom and is appears that is may be just with the view in the Library Module. It goes away when I switch to the Develop mode. I exported the file out and looked at it in my IE browser and it was fine. Is that possible? I usually develop the RAW image. Convert to TIF and do any post processing touch up an then convert to JPG. I just starting noticing this on a few photos |

Okay, sounds like its just an issue with the quality of the preview the software is giving you. There are some free JPEG viewing programs around which can be useful for checking final files, just to be sure.

...I have another problem...
When I convert raw with lightroom to tiff it seems that all the EXIF/IPTC data are lost....
Is this possible....
Any suggestions...
