The OP has the same camera as me. It is capable of One-Touch Whitebalance, which means you hold up a piece of bright white paper in front of the lens (or anything else which is pure white) keeping it in the exact same lighting area you'll be shooting in. Then holding the function key down, snap the shutter. If you're going to shoot with flash, make sure you white balance with the flash on, since the bright blue light will obviously give you a completely different balance. This new white balance setting will be saved and appear in your choices of White Balance options.

To use this function though, you have to first turn ON One-Touch White Balance from the main menu settings (one of the buttons to the left of your LCD). That will enable the function button to be used for this, overriding the default action which is so useless I've long forgotten what it is. :D

Always balance out properly before every shot when you have time to. Or else find a happy medium setting like Cloudy. ;)

White balance is so important to a good shot. A color cast can be easily corrected in Photoshop, but if you have to do that you've used up a big chunk of wasted color potential in your image. So it pays to have it balanced right out of the camera. :D

I sure hope so, 'cause I just submitted a clipped motion freeze image which I hope to do well. ;)

The only problem with this theory is that pure white is not definite- go get two different brands of white copy paper, and you will find a difference in the tones-as I explained:

"Select a neutral coloured object to set your white balance

It’s best to avoid using a white target. The camera prefers grey. If you use white in direct sunlight you'll always get a "No Gd" response from the camera because the Matrix meter is rendering it white instead of grey. Thus the trick is to select the centre-weighted meter when using a white reference in bright light and you'll get "Good" from a camera. Remember to set back to Matrix metering as soon as you're done. "

I don't have this problem, because I never get the opportunity to shoot in enough light that white is white instead of grey. :D

I will keep this in mind though, the next time I shoot under full studio lighting.

Nice work Kenny, also I find it easier to shoot raw and use a digital greycard as reference point, then calibrate on my PC, never really trusted camera white balance...
