Here is a list and explanantion of the choices Martine has to use the donation:

We look forward to see which will be the choice!

Guanacaste Conservation Area, Costa Rica

SaveNature.Org has supported several sites in Costa Rica, but this site is one of our most exciting places. The Guanacaste Conservation Area currently protects the eastern side of three volcanoes: Volcan Orosi, Volcan Cacao and Volcan Ricon de la Vieja. We are trying to add the Ricon Rainforest to the Guanacaste Conservation Area. The Ricon Rainforest is a combination of old growth forest as well as abandoned ranches. SaveNature.Org is working to purchase the ranches fairly from the families that no longer live there and allow the rainforest to continue to grow over the cleared areas. All donations for the Guanacaste Conservation Area are matched 1:1.

Pantanal National Park, Brazil

This park is one of the world's largest freshwater wetlands. Dense populations of jaguars, capybaras, giant river otter and many other animals thrive in the grasslands and forests. But during the rainy season more than 95% of the park is flooded, pushing land animals out of the protected area. Therefore many of the large mammals are at risk of poaching, anthropological related activities, agriculture, mining, etc. SaveNature.Org is working on purchasing an additional 148,000 acres of land that will protect the areas that most animals flee to during the rainy season.

Kunene Region Protected Area, Namibia

Namibia is known for being the second least densely populated region in the world. Desert elephants, lions, black rhinos, and many other mega fauna that have been depleting across Africa still thrive in this country. The Kunene Region Protected Area is needed though to complete the migration of these large animals. Etosha National Park and the Skeleton Coast are the beginning and end of their migration and are currently protected from illegal poaching. But the land inbetween these areas are not protected and so many animals are still being illegally poached. SaveNature.Org would like to create a bridge between the parks with the Kunene Region Protected Area and when complete it will be the largest protected area in the world.

Palau, Micronesia

Palau is one of the most biodiverse coral reefs in the world. It is composed of over 400 islands creating diverse coral reef habitats and channels. Palau is currently being threatened by destructive tourism activities and over fishing. SaveNature.Org is working to protect the coastlines from being developed into hotels and the Palauan government is working on enforcing better practices and re-educating the public about traditional ways to fish.

Komodo National Park, Indonesia

It is the home to the famous Komodo Dragon, but SaveNature.Org is working on protecting the coral reefs. Many areas have been badly damaged because of dynamite fishing. It may take up to 100 years for the reefs to recover.

Parque Nacional del Este, Dominican Republic

Parque Nacional del Este is known for being a nursery for many sea creatures including manatees and several species of sharks. It is also habitat for four species of turtles: the loggerhead, leatherback, green and hawksbill. The habitat is under threat from tourism and development. SaveNature.Org is working on protecting the mangroves and coral reefs from further destruction and pollution.

Thank you all so much!

Out of all these very important projects, we've chosen to take part in the protection of the coral reef of Palau in Micronesia. My son had a say in this, too, and he just loves the reef where Nemo lives ;o)

Hope to see you again in the cooking assignment!

kind regards,

Martine

I noticed that so many of you feel passionate about protecting our environment. I'm also concerned about our planet, and joined the go green movement. I currently work for a company that creates environmentally friendly products. If you're interested go to : http://www.livetotalwellness.com/jworden.
