Was that option available before and I just didn't notice it? |
Yes the primary color search has been there for a while. Another thought would be to have that part filled in when you do a search, or somehow have the RGB value handy after you've clicked on the new color bar. |

It shows up on two of my images and does not show up on the other two images. So it is not consistently available on all images yet.
I agree with the comment that the subject color is not necessarily being chosen as the dominant color. However, I think "dominant" in this case just means the one that there is "the most of" in the picture.
As for other pictures not being relevant in subject matter, that is OK, because a person searching based on color is looking for images based on that feature, not based on subject matter.
It is an interesting new feature that is even kind of fun. :)
I also agree that many people may not know that they can click on colors to find more pictures. Perhaps there would be some way to let them know that they can do that.

It's a good feature, however the color extraction method should be made a little bit more accurately since some really dominant colors aren't extracted. Yes, it's a subjective approach what is dominant, just see these images:

http://www.dreamstime.com/royalty-free-stock-photography-woman-throwing-rose-petals-image1830607

A basic idea of mine is to extract 6 important colors. Reduce a 3:2 image with nearest neighbor method to 9x6px and keep only the hues that are very different and eliminate the similar hues, finally keep only the most saturated ones. A pre-defined color table can help deciding what to keep and what to throw.
Reducing the image and analyzing is one step away from copy space-based filtering.
Also it would be nice to have the color search as an additional filter, so when I click a color, list only the search term's images with a specific color. With a blank search term this will list all the specified hued images. |

This also could stick within entered search keyword phrase, cause i do search for GIRL, then get some, then click dominant and got some FAT MAN or EARTH image.
"memorize options" unfortunately is disabling itself (looks like).

I'm curious how the color is chosen, and if sometimes an error is made. For instance, this photo returns a color dominance result of only a single color - light gray. There are clearly three different colors in here - yellow definitely being one of them.
