New feature: Order a Print

Author Message
Message posted at 10/09/2009, 04:31:12 AM by Pinfoldphotos
I'm looking forward to seeing this come to fruition.....when can we expect it to be rolled out fully? (apologies if I've missed the details in an earlier post).

Does the "printing partner" have a web site through which our images may be accessed/ordered, or will it all be through the DT web site?

Ian.

Would it be possible for there to be a seperate category for print photos, that the photographer can chose to submitt to or not? and why not allow the photographer to choose from a set price banding for their work?

Yes, the printing company has its own profits, but they provide the best prices on the market. We assume that their profit is minimal. Just as we do, they target a high volume of requests.

The profit for the photographer will be above the average RPD, because the system will use the maximum size available. That costs between 6 and 14 credits. Check your My earnings page to see how much you get. We're talking about something from a couple of dollars up to over $10. The fee is the same no matter the product (poster or canvas). .

Ah.. sorry ... now it all makes sense.. i wonder if most complaints are from us males. we don't read manuals, we don't read directions, we don't pay attention to details. yes.. you should take offense .. and i appologize..

let me join the woweee bandwagon.

Sorry, Achilles, I didn't mean to beat this up. I'll try to make what I was saying a little more clear and then I'll leave it alone. I wasn't saying that DT was making a markup. I was just meaning that the printer would make a profit from our images without having to compensate us for using the images. I know DT is doing all they can to help us make money. And images on products is THE thing now. I appreciate all you are doing and am not ungrateful. Just trying to fully understand what this all means. :-)

It would be the same as if somebody bought one of our images and then took it to a printers to be printed. We wouldn't get any commisions on the actual printing in either of the cases.

We could potentially make more on it if they buy a print through DT as they have to buy the largest size available here.

Since this thread is listed under DayDreaming: I hope a Big hotel or motel chain picks up my images and puts a printed version in every room, all over the known world. (...I'll have to add that to my "Dear Santa, I've been really-really good" list) :)

Thank you DT, this all sounds great to me. I can't wait to see this in action. I hope in the future the printing can be expanded to include calendars, mouse mats, mugs, T-shirts, coasters, placemats etc. I'll ask Santa ;)) Cheers

Look forward for a new way for my images to increase in levels, but I'll wait until I start getting some before I get to excited.

As for the printers, why shouldn't they earn a profit on their print job?

Correct, is exactly the same thing. We expect to launch this new feature next week (maybe tomorrow or on Tuesday)

Great idea. Where will the printing be done and how will it be shipped? I'm planning to do a small show at home in the US Virgin Islands but am finding that the cost of shipping is really high. For us, the US Postal Service Priority Mail is much more efficient and a whole lot less costly than any other method.

I've read all posts in this thread since I didn't understand very well how it works at the beginning, but now it's clear and I don't see reason for complaining, at leat for people like me, exclusive photog that don't sell prints in a own page and so, and don't know if this feature is detrimentaling people who sells prints elsewehre, but for me it's fine: more sales and more revenue :)

I'm trying very hard not to be negative but still can not understand the need for the "middleman?"

I'm having level 2, extra large images sold for 36 cents. Can a person not eliminate the DT printing partner and have his/her own printer make any size print wanted? Wouldn't that be cheaper than paying DT and DT's printer to make the print and charge shipping and handling???

How does DT increase sales, improve RPI, hype the sale??? How do I make more money?

I hope I am missing something. I really would like making more money.

I'm not sure what you mean by middleman? There is nothing to prevent you from having your own printer make any size canvas or poster from your or any DT image. If I want a special print of one of my images I have to upload it to another service to have it printed on canvas and mounted on stretcher bars and pay for shipping and handling. If you want to do your own thing you certainly can but you will have to promote it on your own website, and handle all the orders on your own. You could possibly make more money but is it worth the hassle?

If someone who buys your image wants to download it and then send it to their own source to have a poster or canvas made they can do that now and you will get the sale and never know what the use was. With this scheme you are putting everything in the hands of DT and getting the money for the downloaded image, a bump in downloads and the buyer must purchase the highest level, just as if you sold an extra large image for nonprint use. This makes it easier for the buyer if they want a poster or canvas, a one-stop shop, which might make them more likely to make a purchase.

I'm going to wait to see what the prices are for the service thru DT - then I can compare it to local printers. If I truly want a canvas (or poster) of one of my images, or any image I really like here on DT I can go either route - printing by DT or by my own choice of printer. I believe the advantage to the contributor here is another sale, simply that. Any way to bring new buyers in, no matter the reason is a plus. Why would a contributor care if their image was purchased as a download or as a print, the money is the same. You do not currently know what your images are used for, perhaps some are already downloaded to be used as a canvas. We are not privy to how this is going to be advertised so I am willing to wait and see, give it a try. If this is marketed well it could bring new buyers to the site who do not even know what DT is. It might generate more traffic. That's a good thing.

@Warren: yep, you are missing something. The above, from achilles' first post, clearly states that it's credits only (so no subs!) and max size. For a level 2 image, that is about 8 credits if I'm not mistaken. I do think that is substantially more than 0.36 dollars.

For your usual level 2, max size sub-sale however, the buyer can easily upload the file to their local canvas shop and order a print. Only you would never know.

I don't see how this new feature can be a problem...

I really like it!

@Achilles: will there be a way of knowing when a file is sold through this feature? It's not really useful to know but it would be nice....;)
