New feature: Order a Print

Author Message
Message posted at 10/12/2009, 09:42:24 AM by Wisconsinart
I hope this works. Technology is getting such that virtually any venue that does consumer photo processing will be offering this option in a few years. I already can go down the street and have several options for this type of printing.

In other words, it's getting to where it's not a big deal and competition will drive down prices. From DT's perspective, if it increases their revenue by 3%, that's a big deal, so good for them.

Bottom line: If you think you should expect a lot from sales via this new service, you shouldn't. Just concentrate on creating images that will sell well on a consistent basis. That's the one thing I've been struggling with. There are a number of people here who show it can be done, getting to their level of quality and creativity isn't quite so easy.

I think this is a great idea, more and more DT is becoming a one stop shop which will only increase sales and traffic.

'As the service is directed towards the consumer, what we did was to enable them to print the images directly from our site, instead of having to go to a different provider. A single copy will be ordered and our terms will prohibit the reselling of these items (this avoids conflicts with our EL licensing). '

Having read all the above comments and complaints I hardly dare ask..but could you clarify the above statement. Does this mean that I could NOT buy a dozen canvases of my own images and sell them on, not necessarily through my own website but on a one to one basis?

I really appreciate DT's hard work on our behalf! Sandra

you can do whatever you want with your own images. But you cannot sell the prints of images from other photographers.

Just a thought: "Order a Print" added to the FaceBook (uploads and sales) profile app may render a lot of sales from FaceBook surfers. :)

ah, just saw it! Congrats DT, great work!! :)

How about a section on the front page next to most popular images like "most popular prints"? :)

EDIT: or a top 10/20/50/whatever prints or something? :)

When you order a canvas print of an image does it come mounted on wooden backing stretcher bars? If it does not is there anyway we can pay extra to have it mounted this way so we don't have to go through the trouble and expense of getting it done separately? Also, can we specify a "gallery wrap" mounting of the canvas image on the stretcher bars? Are shipping charges included in the "credits" price?

Yes, so far not great marketing of this feature on the site. I was hoping for a splashier presentation, possible actual photo of a finished canvas product with closeup of edges. Is the canvas mounted, how deep of a mount, image wrap around the side? What kind of paper is the poster printed on, does it come in a tube? The details are hard to find and ordering is kind of hidden. Is shipping included in the purchase price - if this is explained when you actually hit the button to order this is backwards - buyers want the details before they commit to a purchase. Can these be shipped everywhere? Again, I was hoping for a more detailed presentation on the Welcome and Latest pages, at least for awhile. Pretend that a buyer has never ordered a poster or canvas print and present it that way. Details, details, details need to be upfront and in your face for more sales.

I recommend having SOME information about shipping on the "order print" tab.

Is shipping included or not? Either way, best to know for the buyer.

Have a nice day

I think this idea is revolutionary...Though I'm not sure I want some of my photographs being part of this, you see..I'm not just a photographer, I do art as well and it is my understanding that once you sell a product of fine art...irrelevant of terms here for it...it is out of our hands...

They cannot reprint it or make duplicates, that's our copyright; but it ends there. If the customer ever should decide that it doesn't look good on their wall anymore, they DO have the right to resell it--at a higher price than what they bought it for.

I'm not sure I appreciate getting only $1 or less for the print to be made whilst everyone else gets to reap the profits of the fine art product that I created.

I agree with the other "complainers," I would like to be able to opt out some of my photos for this feature.

If I had wanted to do this feature I'd be over at imagekind, cafepress, zazzle, and the likes. Those who wants to expand to mugs, mousepads and the sort of stuff you'd like to see in from pics should google up "Print on Demand."

Opting out is still not going to stop the things you mentioned happening as anybody can download your images and get them printed themselves. The only way you can stop this is to not to sell your fine art on microstock sites.
