Database cleaning

1. Is it going to affect approval ratio calculation?

2. Have you considered creating "discount section" for those files? Having limited free section may be useful in general, although I doubt promotional value author personally. At least when I donated one image for test I have noticed no difference on sales pattern.

Having too big free section – is dangerous. You don’t want too many buyers looking for free stuff which is “good enough”.

3. in general

I think each file should be evaluated by inspectors.

Images of common subjects of inferior quality may be removed.

However there are situation when images should be kept:

1. Mainly very narrow niche subjects

2. Fashion - if somebody in 2015 wants to find images of fashion from 2005? Possible. Not very common and hard to find. My designer friend was looking for fashion from 80s recently - you can find it only in old Trad agencies for crazy prices

3. Art images of good quality. If some of them (good quality) slip into free section it may damage sales of others

if the WHOLE database was pruned like this, we'd really have a great improvement. This is the most common cause of bloating in an image database. Of course, this would be very time consuming and i'm sure there is no line-up of inspectors to take on this daunting task.

I suppose if one really feels a niche image will sell, they can bet $0.40 and have it keyworded :)

I don't come from contributor point of view there.

Even if I have handful of niche images, it won’t make big difference for me if I sell additional image in 2 years.

I believe it makes difference for me indirectly as DT contributor.

If DT have reputation of having very full collection (including niche subject) it may motivate buyers with big subscriptions to prefer DT over other sites.

Free images are too easy to download without reading the licensing terms. You simply have to click a box saying you read the terms, not actually read them. Shouldn't this be coded to have a pop-up screen with the terms listed that includes the check box? I guess you could make a case for this for every download not just the free ones but I see tons of bulk image cds for sale in places like ebay and wonder if anyone is downloading our free images and repurposing them for sale on cds? I know this is against the terms of the license and DT would go after the seller. Just thinking out loud since more images will find their way into this section soon (I have a few there).

I agree with cleaning old unselling images. I don't however agree with having them for free.

I suppose the procedure would be automatic - such as images older than 2 years with no sales. I wonder however if a second chance should be given to images of a unique subject? I don't have anything unique myself, but I suppose it may exist - specific places, animals or plants.

Looks to me like you can choose whether or not to donate. It's not automatic.

I don't have any dogs in this fight because I am too new, so my opinion is moot.

Data base cleanup was inevitable with all the growth around here. Sounds like a good thing to me.

For anyone who doesn't want to donate them for free, then don't. I am sure nobody is forcing anyone to donate.

FWIW I have donated a few free images and I think it can help with portfolio exposure. Unlike some other sites that have "free sections", Dreamstime displays and links to other similar images in your portfolio from the free image page. It is likely this will drive some traffic to your portfolio.

Does it show similiar images from our own port or from the db in general? I'd be more inclined if it at least favored my port.

unless DT is having problems with servers and storage space and stuff like that, it would make more sense to just have some sort of age factor in the search return that moves an old no-sale image down a bunch - so basically it would never show up unless the search didn't turn up very many images... That way a search for unique images or a very specific search could still return these images, but they wouldn't get in the way of anyone searching for more common things. Of course if DT is running into limits with servers, etc. Then clearing out the old non-sellers seems like a great idea. Actually very few of my old images haven't sold, but there are a few, and I am sure as the years pass there will be more.

Another good idea would be to offer these files at 50% off regular price. Bargain hunters might like the idea. A file from 2003 is not going to be as good as one from 2009 but if all you need is a web display the 2003 could be good enough.

1.With the new print option that you have announced maybe some of the images that would not sell as stock could be good poster type images. Maybe you should wait to see how that goes before you start cleaning the database.

2. Free images: I do not agree. I have images that may have not sold here but sell in other sites. For sure I would not want to give them away for free.

3. As suggested by another user, a subject may have a limited number of photos. If they have not sold you may be eliminating or reducing the number of available files.

4. Agree on the cleanup but keep in mind other sites pay users to do so.

5. Like the keywording option. There could be good images just lost in the crowd because of keywording.

I am aware that images can be contributed to the free section only if the contributor wishes to contribute it and they are not forced to do so. However, I think thousands of images will be contributed based on the argument that it increases PF exposure etc...That said, I am wary of the offering of all these images to the free section as well because it will give buyers options to download similar images, for free, of reasonable quality (which is why they were accepted in the first place) that are already in the database but being charged for. As a test, take one of the images intended for the cleanup (i.e. over 3/4 years old with 0 DL) and put it in the free section, within days you will see how many times this non selling image is downloaded.

I do however agree that DB cleanup is a good idea but urge contributors to use discretion when submitting images to free selection as it may end up harming other images in your PF (if they have similar newer images not intended for cleanup) and think that too many free images detracts from the DB and charged images.

I think it's a good idea te clean up the old images.

The last time I send every month an image that wasn't downloaded to the free images. I was wondered how much (100x) they were downloaded now as free. I don't know if I had sold now more images regular.

Thousand of more images to the free section is not a good idea I think.

Good idea so long as it considers sensible niche areas although using keymasters is a bit rich given the payment for people to do it is 0.02 for ten words, perhaps 0.08 for complete re-keywording and sold at 0.4 a rather hefty profit margin.

But yes, old stuff in large areas should be cleaned.

After 3 or 4 years, if an image hasn't sold then probably it never will. But on the other hand, sometimes images are ahead of their time.
