If you'll read the original post in this thread, and if you've been around here for any great length of time you will realize that cleaning up the database is an idea that has been requested by contributors for a long time. This is something that is needed to bring some of the newer images to the front of the line and give them more exposure and has nothing to do with more space on the servers.
What was acceptable 5 years ago has changed. Reviewers have changed, cameras have changed, trends have changed and some subjects are so over-covered that it is time to clean out older, non-performing images. That not only benefits DT, but benefits the images that have been lost in the crowd. As an example there are 13,476 images of coffee beans. When going from page to page (regular search) you can only view a total of 4000 results so any images beyond the first 4000 aren't even available for viewing, hence downloading. Do we really need that many images of coffee beans, and so many are almost carbon copies of each other? Why not weed out the non-sellers so the more successful images can be seen and purchased?
I don't believe that the basis for the clean up is that DT is having financial difficulties. Where does this assumption come from? I infer nothing from the original post that implies this. It does state, "A good image may be saved by different keywords. Considering this is a paid option, the contributor will have to consider well which of the files truly have potential." I don't infer that DT is trying to make money from keywording as they caution the use of this option. This is a valid option for non-english speaking contributors as I've run across many great images that are titled or keyworded poorly from obvious problems with english.
I think a clean up is a good idea that will benefit both exclusive and non-exclusive contributors. Donating to the free section is purely a personal decision and has it's pluses and minuses. Time will tell. |

No it's not. The default action is donate for free, so if you can't access DT for while (on travel for instance), your shots will be given away for free. I didn't sign up to Dreamstime to give my shots away for free. I hence object to the default action. Some of those shots sell OK at other sites. If I want to give away my shots for free, I'll do it myself.
Update: the oldfiles link is still dead. |

I've just received the mail also.
I'm sad the blind approach has been followed and messages posted in here where not taken into consideration.
I also disagree the default option is to donate to free section. I'm not even sure that this does not go against the agreement that DT has with contributers.
It's not said the dead line to decide and when default becomes oficial.
An the link does not work, I don't see any image in the page. |

I think that if an image is not wanted for sales it should not be given for free by default. I think that the said image should be removed or deleted by default. Denis |

Agreed, I would be very annoyed to find out that my images were being given away free because I hadn't read an e.mail for whatever reason.

I agree 100%. I am very disappointed in Dreamstime attempting to harvest images for their free section in this way. In my view this is both underhand and unprofessional of Dreamstime to try this on and very unfair to the contributors who support them.
Dreamstime is fully aware that most of us here are also with other agencies and therefore these same images may well be for sale elsewhere. It is therefore down to the owners of the images, the contributors themselves, to positively agree to any free donations. It should not be the default action. The default action should be to Disable such images. |

The new section was launched today, with the 3 options listed and 30 days allowed for making a decision. No files were moved yet, there is one month in which you can think about the right decision to each of your files. You don't have to donate them all, just as you don't have to delete them all. Simply check each of them and see what works best for you.
As some of you noticed, we started with photos that are 4 years old and not 3 years. This makes the initial pool extremely small. We use this data to test the impact over the commercial database. Just as you, we don't want this section to errode the sales, but to help them grow.
We have checked some of the matching files and found them to be way below our current standards. Just check my latest free images to see what we're talking about. There is no way these files can generate significant sales now. We're all passionate about them and it's hard to see them go. But sometimes you have to decide what is best. The agency has to decide which of these options is in its community's best interest. We have selected "donate for free" as the default action, because the content is valuable, we don't want your work to be simply deleted. Assigning "delete" by default would just send that work down the drain.
There is no advertising in that section, so if you don't make money, the agency will not make money either. However, as it was said so many times, the free section helps the site. No matter what we personally believe, the section helps generating more sales. I'm not talking about my point of view, I'm talking based on real facts. Even if you're tempted to say this is a bad decision, remember you don't have the stats we work with.
In the end, you are still the one who makes the decision. You have 30 days to reach a decision, so no one is forcing you. Even if you donate an image, you can still disable it later. |

My problem with the free section is that if a file is not up to standard then it doesn't do my reputation any good to offer it as a present. I would rather delete it.
There is only one out of all those (about 50) unsold files that I've just deleted that I would be happy with today. The others are better off in the bin. |

Paul, no one forces you to do that. If you feel they are even below the free content section, you are free to delete them.
But in the same time, we don't believe these files worth to go down the drain. If you didn't delete them until now, at least let the agency decide which action should be the default one. As one action has to be selected anyway. Selecting none will result in no action taken. No one would care to check them or will just leave them up for sale.
As for the launch, we apologize if anyone perceived this as a silent launch and I assure you we meant no harm. Sending emails and comments is not silent. We missed updating this thread but it was still open and there are 30 days allowed for a decision. Plenty of time for debates.
The announcement is sent only to members who have files older than 4 years with no downloads. It's sent both via email and as a comment. It can hardly be missed. |

Just to add my voice to this discussion -
I agree that this is a good move. I can't speak to what makes sense for Dt as a business, since I'm a photographer, not a stock agency, but I do think that trimming files that aren't selling well will only strengthen individual portfolios, and the site as a whole. In the end, we will all benefit from this. |

Can we opt out of the free section permanently? I don't want my photos going in there if I am away for 30 days or I don't receive an email. I really don't like this, we should be opted out of the free section by default. Other sites don't do this, I always have to take action to put my photos in to a free section and I never do. There is no way my photos can accidentally end up in the free section with the other sites I use, that is a much better way to do it and I sincerely hope DT will do the same. |

I like the process, how cleaning is done. Good job!
But I'm thinking too that default action should be DISABLE.
There could be many users who have abandoned their account and left their photos here, and forgot about them. They don't deserve to end up on Free Images section. Cause they didn't agree with it when they joined the site.
Such files should be deleted and not giving away without consent of the author. We all know that emails don't always work how they suppose to do it.
Good luck with improving the site and cleaning up the database. It's a very good idea. |

I'm too new to be affected by this but I am astounded the default is to give them away for free. It would not surprise me that old images with no sales are not very good, but they may be selling at other agencies, just to make one point.
I have images that I would never give away for free even if they didn't sell. One reason is I wouldn't want to make it difficult for other images to sell.
I think DT has the right to remove images from their database but I don't see how DT has the right to give away the work of others for free. There is a partnership here between DT and contributors but DT does not own the images and therefore it is not their decision to give them away for free.
The only person who has the right to give an image away for free is the owner! |
