What are people's opinions on this camera (E-500). I am thinking of buying it.
Thanks.

Well my Oly 300 was robbed in Asia last month (it's a dangerous world) and I had to fall back on my 3MP Canon Powershot IS S1. Anyways, I want to replace my robbed 8MP as soon as possible and I took some info the past week. My most valuable source of info is of course www.dpreview.com (look at the in-depth review and the owners comments) and "somebody" who is a reviewer at "a" RF-site. He sees a lot of photos daily taken by different cams. My choice is between the Canon Rebel 350 and the Oly 500 (since I still have a lens and extra battery left).

As to Canon, in general (even with the top models) the photos don't look too sharp, a problem the Oly 300 had too. On dpreview, there were many complaints about back-focusing, dust inside (even out of the box), and a very bad support. The kit lenses are very mediocre too. The Rebel 350 is on promotional offer at many places, so watch out: Canon will probably announce a competitor for the Nikon D200 soon.

The Oly 500 on the other hand has a small sensor and a noise problem at higher ISO's. But then, when do you use those? Certainly not for stock. Considering the very low price for the Oly 500, and the fact that the kit lens is better than the one of Canon, I will buy most probably the Oly 500. The money saved I will maybe use on the new Nikon D200 next year, when prices will have dropped. The Nikon D70 is, most people agree, still one of the best. Even if it's "only" 6MP. The D200 should certainly be better.

But before you decide, have a thorough read at dpreview though. I hope this helps.

I'd be interested too in hearing more about this camera from people who have bought one. I'm hoping to replace my "noise and artifacts machine" with a DLSR soon and have been going back and forth between the E-500 and the Nikon D50.

I've looked at dpreview and like what I read about the Olympus, especially the sensor dust protection. The one thing that holds me back is the lenses. From all I've read, the selection isn't as good as with Nikon or Canon. Is it a really limiting factor?

Then again, like Fleyeing said, maybe I should just hold out till the price drops on the D200 next year. How soon will that be, though?

The D50 is basically a trimmed down D70 but with the same image quality. A friend that has both a D70 and an E300 told me the 6MP D70 yields crisper images than the 8MP E300. Not surprisingly since the sensor of the D70 is larger for less MP. I would go for the D50 but since stock sites are becoming quite focused on MP, I think it will be the E-500.

Well...I bought the E-500 and am quite satisfied with the overall quality and value of the camera. I can't compare this SLR to any others since I just moved up to an SLR from point and shoot digitals. I just thought I would put my two cents out there if anyone is thinking about this camera.

One of the best web sites for camera reviews is http://www.steves-digicams.com/. I've used them to research each camera I've bought along the way.

Fleying, I don't know how you take such good shots with the Canon Power Shot. I could never make friends with that camera. Any tips and tricks on the settings? I like to keep a camera in my purse at all times, and my 5D won't fit:-)

Sorry I have been away for a while, so maybe you won't read this any more. The trick with the Canon is to use it at its lowest possible ISO, since it has a small sensor. You have to navigate through the menus, you can force it like that. Of course, skies are always the problem. You can put the sky in a separate PS layer and denoise it with Helicon or Neatimage, then put it back.

But stock agencies got much more critical about MP's and noise lately, so my Canon won't do any more. As I said, it's just a backup cam. And it is sloooow. My DT assignment photo (that won the assignment end last year) was a pain to take. It involved a jump and the shot hat to be exact in milliseconds. I think my model had to do 10 jumps before we had it right. We had to count fast 1-2-3-4 so I could anticipate the cam delay. You should see my bloopers ;-).

Right now I think I will settle for a Sony. It's slow, its not reflex, but it has a great lens, a great sensor, and 10MP. Oh, and it has 24mm so I can do architecture shots again. The Canon only starts at 28mm.

Many people moving up from point and shoots don't understand Canon methodology and think it is a fault. Yes Canon images are soft out of camera and they intentionally make them that way. If you apply a little USM in Photoshop they will be tact sharp. The reason is when you are resizing your image this makes a large difference. If you up size an image before it is sharpened and then sharpen it in its final state it will look great. If you up size a heavily sharpened image it looks horrible. Canon is trying to help its Photographers obtain the best final image. But many people coming from Point n shoots are used to heavily saturated and sharpened images and complain. They just spent $1500 on a new camera and lens and the images are soft. :( They don't realize the need for post processing.

If you don't like it you can always shoot in jpg and up the in camera sharpening and saturation. Then you will get images straight out of the camera like you used to.

I have the E-500 and love it. I use the 14-50 and 40-150 lenses. I have been exceptionally happy with the setup The ultrasonic cleaner I thought was a gimmick but my friends who have higher end cameras constantly fight with dust issues and I never have had to worry about it.

The pictures are great, I dont have a single thing bad to say about it.

I have been checking Olympus SLRs and cannot make up my mind. I have read some comments on the E-500 and E-300. Anyone has a E-330 or E-400? Anybody some feedback on those SLRS? The "likes" and "dont likes"??? Is the E-330 the only one with a live viewer?

If you need live view, try a Sony DSC-R1, it has a better lens. You will come to hate live view, it's slow. A direct optical view is still the best in action and low light situations. For me, I made up my mind. No kit lenses and no toys any more, A Nikon D200 it will be, yoho!

I recently bought the E-500 and am really happy with it but, it is my first SLR though and I dont really have anything to compare it to. I looked around for months before I bought it and read hundreds of reviews. I got mine from Costco for $650 with the dual lens kit and a 512MB memory card. Really the only negative things I have found with the camera is getting new lenses or accessories for it. Every shop I go to only sells Cannon or Nikon, even the few shops that do sell Olympus dont seem to have that great of a selection so I have to get most of my stuff online.

You can check out my profile to see some samples of photos taken with that camera.
