Does anybody have any experience with underwater digital cameras or housing.
I have a Canon D20 but the housing costs more than the body itslef so I am thinking of buying a smaller underwater camera.
I would really appreciate any advice or information.

I use a cheap little setup consisting of a Nikon Coolpix 7900 and an Ikelite housing. I don't really know what I'm looking for but it seems to work fine for me. I recently replied to a similar post here. Man it sure would be sweet having that D20 underwater :) Good luck!

Yeah... unfortunately all housings for DSLRs are more expensive than the cost of the cameras. In addition to that, there's the extra cost for obtaining underwater strobes, arms and tray, new domes for different lenses, etc.
I'd suggest you go for any Canon, Olympus or Sony 'point & shoot' camera that come with their own housings by the same manufacturer. I've been using Canon Ixus series for most of my underwater shots. |

I'm going on a Mediterranean beach holiday, with a lot of snorkeling involved (so no "heavy" scuba-diving), and I was thinking about buying a waterproof camera.
It would also be nice to have a second, smaller and lighter camera where I don't have to worry a lot about the sand and water drops when we're on the beach (which will be a lot!).
I'm looking into these models:
- Olympus µ TOUGH-3000
- OLYMPUS µ[mju:] Tough-6020
- OLYMPUS TOUGH 8000
- OLYMPUS TOUGH 8010
- CANON PowerShot D10
- SAMSUNG WP10
Could you please give me some advice? |

A friend of mine is going to be professional with shooting underwater. He uses a Canon Mark IV.
Last time we talked about that and he shows me his wonderful images, he said to me: "the most important item is a perfect housing for the cam. Never try to save money on it."
Because you need a perfect setting of the cam inside and size of the nipples to press all the buttens on the cam.

If I were getting a waterproof camera I would get this one-has a reputation for good quality photos. I used to have a Pentax WP30. It performed well for 6 months then stopped working. I sent in for warranty repair and Pentax refused to fix it. I do not know about Panasonic. The problem with all in one waterproof cameras is that they are not as secure as those in top quality waterproof housing designed to withstand pressures of 130'. That said you might get 6 months to a year out of an all in one waterproof camera.

Thanks for your comments.
Shootalot, so you'd get PANASONIC TS2? I have to look it up, haven't seen them in the stores.
I heard about Pentax going back on their warranty and refusing to fix their waterproof cameras, so I haven't put them on my list.
I also heard the CANON POWERSHOT D10 is really good underwater, so at the moment I'm leaning towards this one - though I also got some recommendations for the OLYMPUS tough 8010...
Pro Olympus tough 8010 - it has better optical zoom (14 MP), optical zoom is 5 x, wide angle lense...
It has 2 GB of internal memory (OK, 1,6 GB in effect, as stated on the Olympus website), so I don't even have to worry about memory cards.
Pro Canon Powershot D10... don't know, maybe just because it's Canon? :D
Oh yes, because the shop offers 2 year warranty (and the shop where I'd buy Olympus 8010 offers only 1 year warranty)...
Just my musings outloud, obviously I still need help...
