I've been looking at 500-600 mm lenses for a Canon 50D. I'm trying to balance quality and reliability with cost. I've considered used gear and Tamron or other third party lenses... any suggestions?

Canon EF 100-400 mm f/5.6 IS L .... on 50D you will get 640 mm effective. Is at a good price an it is an L lens with IS. If you want to get even more focal length get the 1.4x extender....
Canon 7D , 40D, Canon EF 17-40 f/4 L, Sigma 50mm f/1.4 EX H...

Sigma has 120-400/4.5-5.6, 150-500/5-6.3 and 50-500/4.5-6.3 at resonable prices.

Tamron has a 200-500/5-6.3.

Tokina has 80-400/4.5-5.6.

However I guess non of them are close to Canons affordable telephoto lenses such as:

400/5.6, 100-400/4.5-5.6 and 300/4 + 1.4x Ext.

Most mm for the money are the sigma 15+-500mm zoom lenses.
A camera, a lense and a tripod.
