Problem with AF on Canon 16-35

Asakalaskas
I recently purchased a used Canon 16-35 and now the AF isn't working. When the AF/MF button is switched from MF to AF the camera won't recognize the mode. I've tried clearing all the camera settings and changing the battery. The contacts dont visibly appear dirty but I cleaned them anyways, the mirror also appears in good working order. The pins also don't appear bent. My other lenses work fine, although this is the first EF lense I've had. Should I assume the USM is bad?

Hi, Canon 16-35 is a great lens that i dreamed of. From whom did you buy this used lens? have you ever test it before buying (to make sure that it is in working condition) ? I assume this lens 16-35 is the 'L' series, if so, there shouldn't be any problem when attach on any Canon EOS body...

I can't think of any reason it wouldn't work set to AF. I can think of several reasons, but none apply if another lens works fine. Only thing I can think of is that you hold it different, and you end up holding down the depth of field preview button...

I believe AF lenses have electronics that may fail over time. Also, there could be internal damages that can't be visually detected. You may want to have your lens checked by an authorized Canon service center....
