Inclined to let it run and see where it goes, small group of (mostly not very well performing) images, notified in advance. This is not the smash & grab we have seen from other agencies.

Guys, we accept and respect everyone's opinion, but please keep a civilized tone of voice. Next step would be suspending your posting rights.

Thank you for understanding!

We don't actually know what it is. We don't know the terms of the agreement, the length of time it intends to run, or what the payment would be. That is my big problem: I can't make an informed decision because I have no information beyond "Congrats! We're going to give some of your images away for free!"

I want to know, specifically, what it's going to be used for and how long the beta testing phase is going to last. I would also like an idea of how the monetisation will work - are we paid per image use, or per impression of the image (as in, how many people see it)?

Agree with Fred11. Let them experiment. I don't think a business will give something for free with no hope in a further earning. From time to time I feel the same frustration, but we must learn to trust our agent. Like an actor or singer or else. They know to do business, we know to do photos.

Exactly! I think the DT team is far and way too clever to give anything for free, forever. Of course! its pilots everywhere and in tons of different businesses. This is nothing new.

best.

Yes Bob, you're quite right. However in this case, the same people in the same two forums would STILL instigate and meddle and destroy, dragging tons of people with them and many of them are not even members of DT.
It would have been a pointless exercise.

Ah! a fellow paddy :)

Normally I'd agree but it's not blanket use of images and DT have been upfront about it and the particular images. Given the small number of (mostly) not well performing images, I'm not seeing massive risk

Fred11, I am on the side of Dreamstime wholeheartedly! The better they do, the better we all do, and I really enjoy being here. What was my hobby for many years now brings me extra cash that supplements my pension after many years of working, and for that I am grateful. However, when I see fundamental mistakes or cockups that may affect me, I have to speak out. Creating mistrust, and unknown quantities, is the place of the opposition, not the people who are meant to be working with you mutually.

I honestly thought the "exciting", email was spam. Ssch, dont tell anyone, send your details and your special. Immediately, if you have an ounce of intelligence, mistrust is created. Everything else is b******s because your not listening!

With the greatest respect, not all ideas that evolve in the boardroom are great ideas, even with the best intentions, I am sure the board of Enron, FW Woolworths, Lehman bros etc etc, would love to have another try, that is why everyones thoughts and ideas should be listened to.

All I know is when I get $4 for a 20 credit sale, it was most likely through a partner.

I don't feel very civilized when that happens.

I'm no monster of microstock. I don't make a living doing this.
I don't like giving anything away for free either, but let's face it...
There are other agencie(s) out there that are currently offering images for free in a similar fashion.

What drives sales is traffic and if other agencies have a vision to kill their competitors with a plan of free images and gain the traffic, what other choice is there for a stock agency but to look at possible ways compete?
Even grocery stores and such have lost leaders to bring in traffic to their location and hope that by getting that traffic, the buyer purchases other items while there.
If the 'test program' drives traffic due to some of my low or no sale images and gets people to shop here instead of elsewhere it could be a win.
If the program has embedding in the images, forces link backs to Dreamstime and limits resolution/size; if it is trackable by Dreamstime and has view limits on web pages after which purchasing licence is required, that could be a win also.
It may even help in the fight against the rampant piracy of images throughout the web which for the most part is uncontrollable.

Since the test is limited to a portion of Dreamstime contributors, and those contributors have a choice to opt in, for me it's worth a try.
We'll have to see how it goes.

I'm torn. While I think new ventures are a good idea and changing with the industry is the only way to success I am bothered by a couple of factors that I can't shake:

1. If it's such a small beta test that will only go on for a couple of weeks or so, why can't the agency compensate contributors in some small way? Answer: because it's better for the agency if the burden of cost falls on the contributor, the ones least able to afford to give away hard work for nothing. That is a problem for me.

2. The only opt out provided is a blanket opt out of the entire partner program. I believe I am getting a good percentage of sales from partner sites and opting out of the program would mean a major hit to my revenue which is not great to begin with. That subtle strangle hold of "play along or pay the price" is not an accident. They are making it as difficult to opt out as they can. I have a problem with that.

However, even though some of the images selected are selling well on other sites and those sales may be negatively impacted by this, I am electing to give it a chance on the hopes that it will result in growth for me for the first time in 4 years.

The good thing is we were told in advance and have the opportunity to opt out - which I did. I don't like giving away any part of my uploads, even if only 6% of my total images. This "small group" sells well on other sites. If buyers can get them for free on DT, why would they continue to purchase anywhere? DT is a business and will do what's best as a company for profits. We can only do what's best for our interests. While I don't mind a calculated risk, there are too many unknowns in this venture for me. I respect DT for giving me the option to say no and can only hope that the hit I take from opting out is not extremely hard. Guess I'll just have to work harder at selling my fine art outside of stock.
