To me it looks like a pretty profitable and fair change for everyone, including the agency.

New content instantly goes up 2 credits(!) due to increments in the level ladder (level 1 and up), at the same time the revenue percentage is inherited from the older "revenue levels", i.e. ~2.5-5% less but from higher prices to start with(!). This is not the same as if the latter cancels out the former - the 2 credits increment is higher than the "reduction" in royalties. Moreover, newly uploaded images are going to reach level 5 much (2x) faster, which is to reflect their higher quality (technical in first place, I guess). So the only real royalty reduction is applied to the levels 0 and 5. But hopefully we will have more sales at the "+2 credits" intermediate levels. :) It is also fair to sell cheaper the old unsold stuff, which one can consider for removal anyway.

ps: if anyone finds a mistake here, please, correct me...

[quote... In order to keep the royalties the same, we had to decrease them one per level....[/quote]

Why did you have to "keep the royalties the same"?
Why is it necessary that you keep a bigger share of the pie?
When will I read an announcement that reads "In order to better serve our contributors we had to increase the royalties"?

You are charging more per download, so even when keeping the percentages as they were, you will make more money.
As this move does not change your cost structure, you could even afford to INCREASE the percentages without losing anything.

Where is the logic here (other than you take the easy way to increase your profit by lowering our share as we cannot do anything about anyway)?

Sorry, I don't see this as a good move.

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY
There is no lowering of our share
for example if you had image of level 1. It got 30%. Now this image become Level 2.
You are getting 30% for level 2 under new system.

The only share cut is for images that haven't sold for 24 months.
That's it.

BTW here are numbers of commission change in credits.

Dirkr, maybe it could help to look at it this way:

Previously the newly uploaded image would sit at level 0 and bring you 25% for the first sale, then it would be level 1 (30%) and so on. Now this same image will jump to level 1 (+2 credits, 25% as for the old level 0), then after the first sale it goes to level 2 (30%) and so on. So, there is absolutely nothing non-exclusive contributors lose, only gain! The royalties are cut for level 0 in first place, as it equals "old unsold stuff" (one can remove it not to lose anything in royalties, and I think that's part of the equation). Yes, new level 5 becomes like old level 4 in terms of royalties, and this is the only real cut one can complain about. OK, maybe you can convince DT to introduce level 6 with royalties of old level 5, could be a good thing, in fact. :)

update: Mocker, you were faster :) ...and are correct, except for the level 5...

royalties have always been a mystery for me here at DT as they are anything but consistent and I gave up early even to try to understand this.

Now, if I look at http://xxxstockpics.com/tmp/dtprice.jpg (I don´t know who made this list nor where he got these numbers from, but take it as granted for a moment) and compare these numbers with my royalties of sold images there is no coincidence at all between those numbers.

just an example from the last days:

This is a level 0 purchase 1 credit (2010) $0.31 extrasmall (Editorial)
This is a level 0 purchase 1 credit (2010) $0.21 extrasmall (Editorial)

Is there any logic in here ?

Well, here is how it goes.

Old levels system: 0 (25%, 27.5%), 1 (30%, 33%) ... 3 (40%, 44%), 4 (45%, 49.5%), 5 (50%, 55%)
________________ 0 sales ___ -> 1 sale __ ... __ -> 10 sales __ -> 25 sales ___ -> 50 sales
________________ 1 -7 credit(s) -> 3-10 crds ... _ -> 7-15 credits -> 9-17 credits _ -> 11-19 credits

New: 0 (20%, 22%), 1 (25%, 27.5%), 2 (30%, 33%) ... 4 (40%, 44%), 5 (45%, 49.5%)
_____ 0 sales > 1 yr, 0 sales now -> 1 sale __ ... __ -> 10 sales __ -> 25 sales
____ 1 -7 credit(s) -> 3-10 credits ______ ... ______ -> 9-17 credits -> 11-19 credits

Pros for contributors:
contributors are granted +2/3 credits to start with,
i.e. 1 sale at old level 0 skipped, then 4/5 sales less to levels 2/3,
15 sales less to level 4, and 25 sales less to level 5;
level 5 is ~2x faster to reach => more images on level 5 as a result
=> faster making $$$.

Pros for the agency:
80% for the agency on once sold old images, or removal of those by contributors;
the upper bound: ~5% less for level 5 images, which become "mass product"
=> gross increase in profit. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Now you are welcome to praise or complain... ;)

On a different note, stop using "partners" who cut deep into profits for both Contributors and DT. Instead, use some of that money for advertising.

What does it cost to have Google drop DT into the first page when designers are searching for stock agencies?

I think it looks positive, even for non-exclusives. It means a sizable jump for sales on new uploads, while making up for the drop in level 5 royalties with a much large number of level 4's and 5's. Time will tell, but I've been well rewarded by the level system in the past... Looking forward to seeing it in action.

Imma sit back and see how this plays out. 2012 sales pale in comparison with 2011, at least for my case. End of the day, an increase in revenue is what most of the contributors are after; hope this new scheme bring in the big bucks. =)

That's a very thoughtful change. I've seen some decrease in my sales during the testing period but my earnings remained steady which gave a better per image revenue. Love it!

The discrepancies you may have seen in the past days were due to the previous tests we did. Those customers continued to use the new system of pricing.

This is not that complicated, almost everything that was already selling is now selling at a higher price (difference is bigger for small files and almost inexistent for higher ones) AND royalties are split the same.

Let me try again, it seems my first post wasn't clear enough.

Old level 0 is now split into:
- level 0 - gives you 5% less but these are files that didn't sell in 2 years. And if they sell it's only for the first download that you take a cut (price is the same). Note that after first download they jump straight at level 2.
- level 1 - these were level 0 before and same royalties (25%) are awarded now, at higher price

Old level 1 is now level 2 - same royalties as before, higher price
Old level 2 is now level 3 - same royalties as before, higher price
Old level 3 is now level 4 - same royalties as before, higher price
Old level 4 is now level 5 - same royalties as before, higher price

Old level 5 remains level 5 but has lower royalties (5% less), for the same price.

The only exceptions are the past level 5 and part of the past level 0. As you can see the vast majority of files still have the same royalties but sell at higher price. The revenue for almost all of them is split as before.

Dreamstime still rewards 60% for its exclusive contributors, 8 years after its inception. They never took a hit, even though the margin for marketing is lower and it's difficult to compete. But at least we know we have exclusive content and commited contributors. If you worry about your royalties you should stop using agencies that provide low percentages or ask them to raise them for you. As long as you contribute there don't expect us to keep royalties more than theirs because it would be impossible to compete.
