You need to target the high end buyer because most of your sales come from them. High end buyers don't surf through Facebook, they come HERE.
Afagundes has good stats because he has a quality portfolio, not because he's tweeting.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Sure :) but don't high end buyers do all my subs with their cheap credits? ;)

2. I don't believe buyers to be surfing Facebook for images, though Google algorithms do :) .... and links and (SEO) is a different story.

3. I really like Afagundes portf., that's why I tease him about his sales
... but most I enjoy he is very proactive and open minded

+ we all know, good images, technically perfect, reasonable key-wording is a must. It's just not all that can be done to be successful.

I'd be all in if I got thousands of web bits each month through social media. The reality is perhaps 10-20 hits and how many of those would be an actual buyer? Until someone can show me hard numbers I'm just not seeing social media being anything other than the latest fad.

Maybe I should dig out my old CB radio. "Breaker breaker anyone wanna buy a picture of a scarecrow and log cabin?" Same thing different technology.

Sales are random historically speaking, I have old files and new files selling all the time, not a pattern here.

New files might take more than a month to start selling, I dont know if this is a problem of the index of the search engine or is it that buyers are working on their concepts moving them to lightboxes.

In the past, it happened many times that a file sold as soon as it was uploaded, I think people saw it on the Latest Aditions tab, nowadays, this rarely occurs, I think its because there are so many images being uploaded that images stay on this tab for a very short time.

The pattern I saw many times is subs of the same subject being downloaded in a row, like 4 or 5 images of London, for sure this came from the same buyer.

Dont forget that we now have level 0 images, so if the buyer search for price he will see those old files with no downloads first.

Put all of your images in the free section except one....that should get you some traffic to sell your one image a million times:)

I dont use my facebook page to promote stock but I do use it for my local contracted work. I would say that 99% of the sessions that I do for families, couple, children has come from promoting myself on facebook. I dont want to mix stock with my portraits sessions and for that reason I dont use my FB to promote stock nor do I mention to people that I do stock unless I meet someone that I would like as a model ;)

LOL!

Kelpfish, to be honest with you I have no prove that offering images for free increase sales.

I'm with you. Most portrait clients wouldn't think much of it, aside from losing interest in you from mixed marketing which is bad enough but some will think "Hang on are my wedding or kids photos going to pop up on some website somewhere?" and they'll possibly go to a competitor .. and for a full time photographer those few clients who get scared off add up to tens of thousands of dollars in lost clients at the end of the year.

If I was to use FB to promote stock it would definetely not be under my studio name and I'd advise using another profile specifically for it.

haha, a few years ago on another site forum (exact details maybe sketchy here), a contributor announced he'd put some of his images in the free section for 30 days to try and drum up some sales. He came back a few days later saying it didn't seem to be working, but instead of dropping the idea he went on to say that he'd now put about half his port in the free section. I don't remember him reporting back after that. Maybe he retired early because of the wealth he accumulated. ;)

Absolutely amazing video, cheers for that Afagundes :)

Though I don't think, he would even consider to upload his image to microstock to sell for "peanuts" ;)

Aside from the nice comments from my friends when my sold pix show up on FB, I think the autolinks might make a difference - I''m assuming that's why DT and others encourage them.

My top sellers seem to be the photos that show up as the thumbnails and I find whichever photo shows up in the thumbnail in "I sold # photos on DT (or that other site)" on FB and twitter, usually sells again that day or sometime that week - often many times. One photo that seems to show up on my FB page a lot just became a level 5 here today and it's sold over 100x elsewhere. With a small portfolio, I have to think that's not bad.
Here's the photo:

Blue green and aqua turquoise abstract background

Another one of my backgrounds sold this morning and then a second time after it showed up on FB:

   Yellow pink purple abstract background

I'm not getting any referral income from these so no way to be sure if someone's clicking through - maybe they're just showing up higher in searches after they're sold? Hard to know.

Hi Worldplanet, good to hear your promotion is working.

I´ve been busy too, posting in Google+ (where I have 960 followers) and Facebook, where I have a lot of friends, but I dont know who shall I trust of those FB friends.

I had very few referrals, but I sometimes feel that the buyer got intereseted by knowing me from the social media, some coincidences just are too "coincidental".

Right now, I am thinking, build it and they will come, so I am working hard on my portfolio, but also promoting it in FB and Google+

Well, I thought maybe it was time to come back to this thread, I currently have 1588 followers in Google+, I was added to 9 circles and having several comments and plus 1´s on each post.

I just changed strategy though, instead of publishing the links towards specific images, I am making a collection and posting an image that I will not sell here as a sample with a lighter watermark,

Than I write a small blog about the collection, its actually fun to do.

In the end I link to my portfolio and to the collection.

It turn out that people get much more interested and maybe this will lead towards better sales, at least is leading towards more views, I can see that.

But for sure is leading towards better interaction, so I am learning more and getting better known faster, I will let you know. And maybe I will make some new virtual friends.

If you want to know what do I mean, go on and take a look.

Image not available or id is incorrect.

BTW I am posting it in Facebook as well, but interaction is almost zero there.

We'd all do a lot better if the blogs were more designer focused instead of photographer focused. All the forums and blogs are photographers talking among themselves. It might attract more contributors but any more buyers.
