Staying exclusive or not?

I have joined several agency's and one of them is selling very well and almost compensating for what I lost on earnings here. I must say that at this point I can not say that it was the best decision. I think it might be better when I finished uploading everything. I still did not do that and it's allot of work key wording at all the different agency's! For all the people that are happy here being exclusive... stay exclusive! Uploading you complete portfolio to others is very much work and I do really mis the big credit sales. They have dropped 50%. But sales are still very frequently and Dreamstime will stay one of my best sellers. Even if you are not exclusive they pay out more credit sales for higher earnings than the other agency's were you really need many sales to compensate. So Dreamstime is still my favorite and I would not recommend people to stop exclusivity right away if they are happy with it. The sales as exclusive are ABSOLUTELY NOT bad compared with the others! And I think that with a large portfolio of 500+ images here being exclusive you can absolutely earn a nice amount of income depending on your portfolio quality. I have 360 images online now and still sell very well as a non exclusive.

BUT! I am just non exclusive for 2 weeks so this is just a pre-conclusion. I will get back and let you know how I am doing at the end of this month when I have a complete month of sales on Dreamstime and other sites. It is to early to really make conclusions now but I thought some of you were wondering how I was doing for now. :)

In the mean time I wish you all many sales! :)

Twindesign, since you joined this path, why dont you try RM as well? Get your top sellers there and see if they can sell for a premium price.

But if I RM some of my images I can not use them at other sites anymore right? So I have to get some images exclusive for RM? And if they don't sell I get no income. Also you would need a large portfolio size RM images to have some sales on the RM. Do you have experience with this? I would like to hear more if so! :)

An update:

I have been uploading to 3 other agency's but only one can compete with Dreamstime and I have every day sales there. It earns me more than Dreamstime as a non exclusive but by far not enough as I would earn as an exclusive.

And all my images accepted here are not all accepted at other agency's but some do accept images that Dreamstime does not accept. But overall Dreamstime accept the most images and I find the reasons at other agency's really weird sometimes and not correct. Dreamstime also rejects images but in my case I understand their reasons for 95% of the rejections and I cannot complain. They are fair with rejections and objective. I get images rejected for "out of focus" that are just NOT out of focus. By now I sure know what out of focus is and some images are pin sharp but rejected for that reason.

I was also told that some images sell better at other agency's than at Dreamstime and some sell better here than at others. This sounded strange to me but it's true. I have images online at the competition that sell almost every day but have not had sales at Dreamstime and some of my best sellers here hardly sell at other agency's. I really did not expect this and thought that with only my bestsellers online I would have great sales but images I did not expect to get many sales there sell great.

Overall I am still not convinced that leaving exclusivity was my best choice. I dropped from $150 in July to $40 this month on Dreamstime and overall sales do not compensate for this but I am giving it some months more. I do miss the Dreamstime credit sales as an exclusive. Level 4 and 5 images earned great for Hi ress sales were now I will never get a +$10 sale anymore.

I will keep you all up to date!

Twindesign,

There are some sites where the constant upload is important to the success. In others, you only start to see the money with a big portfolio. All of these variables are important in your decision. Maybe you will prefer to upload less and stay exclusive (less work too). Or maybe you will start getting good results with multiple sites. Thanks for keeping us updated :)

I agree with you, the reject reasons in other sites are really bad! Try uploading these 'out of focus' images with a reduced resolution. Maybe they will accept them as in 100% they will be sharper.

Cheers!

Wish you luck. You have various portfolio with great images... I was in exclusivity (not as photograph, just with exclusive images) but still I`m not sure what is the right choice. We have similar situation (full time jobs, kids...time consuming :-) and being on different marketplaces require lot efforts. But, at this point, I still not looking at reverse point, to become exclusive again.

This is long journey... so... :-)

Cheers!

Sometimes images are rejected for focus issues if the DOF is not correct. To short sharp area.

Starting out being exclusive at DT is a rather good idea. IMO - They pay for accepted uploads so that helps upgrade equipment and you can focus on figuring out what microstock is all about rather than dealing with multiple agencies. The environment here is great for learning, the staff is great, the interface is easy to use and the sales come eventually as you build a decent portfolio.

Its also much easier to keep organized when you only have to deal with one set of portfolio images. But there is always that lingering thought that one could do better with multiple agencies.

You have to ask yourself - how long did it take before my images started selling consistently on DT? Certainly not a few days.

Thanks for your reply.

First sales came when I had about 40-50 images online and good images always sell within the first weeks. At 150 images I got every day sales. Other agency's are already selling and the biggest one started selling from day one. I do not believe that images should 'mature' or that constant upload is a factor. I believe that quality wins over quantity so as soon as I have my max of images online at other agency's I think I can get a conclusion.

The constant (and sometimes seasonal) uploads help to increase the sales, but it is not a key factor as the quality. I agree 100% with you: quality is the most imporant and it is what will lead to the success.

Hi everyone...

First of all, I think DT admins deserve a big thanks here, just for letting this topic on. There are many comparaisonal posts about DT and other agencies.

It was very interesting to read all the posts by everyone.

I left exclusivity last summer. I uploaded to 2 more agencies and started to wait for dollars to run in my wallet! Nothing came :))) in 3 months, I made 9 dollars in iAgency and 3 dollars (I don't remember really) in Agencolia :)) please note that these are not monthly incomes, but total incomes in three months. At the same time, I made 90 dollars in DT. The difference was huge so I decided to knock the DT's door again. They invited me in, gave me a hot soup and a blanket :) I fell asleep...in my dream, I was in a green colored web site and requesting my 100$ payment...while I chat with good friends.

This is a real story.

How are thing going on? You did not turn exclusive again, so I suppose you are quite happy with your choice.
I often thought about not being exclusive anymore, but I wonder about the money implication: I understood I should give back part of my earnings, but I might be wrong, at least I hope. Can anyone tell me about it?

Yes, don't venture away from here. Buyers on other sites don't want Dt's exclusive images, as those buyers are from completely different planets and can't relate to images taken on earth, hence no one sells anywhere else. Stay exclusive folks, believe me there's nothing out there ;-)
