Have you ever been using extension ring / tube? How important is its length? I saw on BH presentation two different length tubes but the same 1/2 magnification. How does affect image quality, what is the longest tube for a given lens? Thank you. |

I use extension tubes all of the time. They are great tools. First they have no glass and don't affect the quality or sharpness of your images. They basically change the focal range. When you use tubes you will only be able to focus within a very tight range so it takes a little more work than with a real macro lens. Get a set of 3 tubes (12mm, 20mm, 36mm). You can stack them in all sorts of different combinations. The length basically determines how close you can focus, the longer it is the closer you can get. I use the Kenko tubes, they are all over E-bay. Don't buy the tubes that don't have the electrical connections. If you do you will loose your ability to control the aperature and autofocus.
Hope that helps,

I just ordered some from Hong Kong on Ebay, they arrived safe and sound last week. Just started playing around with them, but they appear to work amazingly.
You are right about the electrical connections. It costs more, but worth it in the end. |

When you are trying to get really close if you don't stop down the DOF will be extremely small. So without the connections they are pretty much useless. I'm glad they are working for you.

Hi,
I've been using Macro " filter" ie. a single lens that you attach in front of the main lens to increase size and reduce focus distance.
This lens create some distortions, a lot of chromatic aberrations, and the focus range is only a few centimeters ( like : minimum distance 7 inches and maximum distance 8 inches on a zoom lens that was 3 feet to infinite )
My question : What focus range do you get with the extension tube ? is it as little as what I got with the lense ?
Thanks,
Xavier |

With extension tubes you won't get any distortion. I've used those macro filter before and I didn't care for them at all. You have to get a different macro filter for each lense because usually the filter size changes which each lens. With tubes it will work with all lenses that are compatible with your system. But yes to focus range will decreses to very small range with tubes just as they do with macro filters. That's why I said they are more work than getting a true macro lens. If you have $700 definitely go buy a true macro lens.
