I use 3d studio max but only because the school I went to used it. It works well enough though and I found the workflows in other applications, like Maya, so different from 3D Max that I had a hard time learning them.
Almost any middle of the road pc will handle everything but the most complex renders but I'd definitely recommend a video card good enough to run two monitors at a fairly high resolution. If not you will end up with more menus and dialog boxes on the screen than actual work area.
Bigger, faster machines are always better, but come with diminishing returns.

That said, I use a Gateway i7 with 16 gig of ram I bought from future shop.

Whatever you decide, have fun. I love working in 3D!

Easiest and cheapest introduction is Daz (free) and they even provide a free modelling tool (hexagon) & there are loads of web tutorials available.
Vue 7, Daz 3, Wings 3D and the odd photo.

Daz, 3d studio e Maya......Are they good for every kind of subject...or each software is specific for something in particular (e.g. interior design, human model,....object...text...)????

Max and Maya are able to do anything. Max is used in a lot of games and Maya is used in film.
Haven't really tried Daz.

Yeah - those are the real pro tools (beyond my skills and budget).

One suggestion might be to look at the galleries on a site like renderosity where you can filter by the various tools used to create the images and get a sense of the capabilities

That's excellent advice from Heywoody, Libux77.
It's not the tool, it's the creativity of the user that counts, and from looking at his work I expect he'd be making awesome 3D work using almost anything. Good stuff Heywoody.

Hello, I am new here. I haven't even posted anything yet but I have some experience with 3d programs. There are a lot of programs and tools out there even cheap or free ones. 3ds max, blender or others are very good choices if you know how to work with them. I found that DAZ is especially good for creating landscapes so I recommend you try that as well if making landscapes is what you're looking for. As for the graphics card If you got a decent one that digest 3d fine you can create about anything like Rik57 said "It's not the tool, it's the creativity of the user that counts". I got a pretty crappy graphics card - NVIDIA GeForce 9500 GT and I'm doing fine with it but 3d requires more muscle so I'll have to change it real soon.

I would never have figured Daz for landscapes - I'll be interested in checking these out once you have some stuff uploaded.

Thanks. I actually have some 3d images but they aren't hq enough for this site so I'll have to start from scratch when I have some time. This is the first time I'll actually try to upload and sell something so I'm still trying to get my head over all this laws I have to go through, for example "You are citizen of a country with an income tax treaty with the US. Please ensure you have submitted the W8-BEN tax form in order to benefit of a 10.00% US withholding tax otherwise the maximum 30% will be deducted" What sold I do here?

Never mind I am going through found instructions. It's no big deal!

Have used Max, Blender, but now use cinema 4d. t all depends upon the budget you have and what you want to do with it. Do some examples on my website that have been done in a variety of different programs. to show what can be done in even the simplist of software.

It all depends on how dedicated you are in learning the software and getting to know how it workd.

good luck with your 3d

Blender is free and looks good, my problem is the AMD graphics card on my notebook which can't be changed apparently. AMD graphics seems to have a problem with Blender whereas NVidia works better.

For my 3D work, I used Hexagon and Bryce, due to them being inexpensive and easy to use. I am no expert with 3D, however, they are my best sellers.
