Tragic Mistaken Identity 9/17/04 (VOCM News)

This is one of those that takes the cake. A police officer calls it an unfortunate circumstance and a shock. A Newfoundlander identified as the victim of a train accident last week is alive and well. People gathered at a Toronto funeral home yesterday to mourn Dane Squires and as the casket was being taken away for cremation, the man they thought was dead called the funeral home and spoke with his family. A family friend reportedly told the Toronto Sun, a few hours later, the supposed dead man was in his sister's house. Police had appealed to the public for help in finding the identity of the person killed by the train last friday night. Detective Constable Dave Stirling says Squire's sister identified the dead man as Squires after viewing the body at the coroner's office. He says there must have been a likeness. Coroner Dr. Barry McLellan is quoted as saying having a family member view and then identify a body is the most common way to identify dead people. He says the relative was quite confident as to the identification. The real deceased's body has been recovered from the funeral home and returned to the coroner's office for further investigation.
