How do you approach getting a model release signed?

I have the misfortune of being a very shy person, but I love photography, so I have been slowly but surely overcoming it in order to pursue doing what I love. I have spoken to a number of photographers in my area about how to find or approach models, and they all say basically the same thing. Just walk up and ask if you can photograph the person.

OK, so I have that part... but once I have the shot, how do I go about bringing up the model release? I don't want to make it sound like there's something scary about the whole thing... how do you do it? Just hand it to them and say you need it signed?

It wouldn't work here in Estonia, because you see, our people are generally such, that when you mention that you're going to sell the image - you see a flicker in their eyes and they won't sign it for free. :)

The other thing is that I should translate the release into Estonian, 'cause the people from the street might not understand English very well, and suspicious as they are, they just wont sign anything they don't understand.

Is it just here, or has anyone experienced the same "issues"?

I understand that you don't want to make the person believe they can make a lot of money by refusing to sign the release, there are people here in the (ever more capitalist) USA who do the same thing... I had a beautiful redheaded woman who discovered I was planning to do a coffee table book about redheads and refused to sign the release until she saw a lot of dollars in her bank account. There went those photos.

What I need to know is, how do I get the subject out there and the release signed without

A) Scaring them about how it's a legal matter or
B) Making them demand money before they'll sign it?

And by the way, Demonike, I'm afraid you're probably out of luck when it comes to translating the releases. You'll need to consult one, possibly two lawyers to get it translated and verified for both languages, and even then, chances are good Dreamstime won't accept it, because their lawyers probably can't read Estonian!

Like You am shy, and even more affraid of approaching woman. I have signed up with an agency called One Model Place You can even state in your profile that you want to do commercial work and sell it as stock. Only those people that are interested will contact you. I signed up about two weeks ago, and dispite the holiday chaos, I have two models booked for January.

I haven't tried getting model releases from anyone other than immediate family yet, but it might help if you offer to send them copies of the photos in exchange for them signing the release. I know some people who do this all the time with great success.

Apletfx, thanks for the suggestion. I'll have to try that once I have the money spare to join them.

Philipdyer, I think perhaps being so tired, I didn't ask what I wanted to know in the right way. :) What you describe is pretty much what I had in mind... what I want to know is how to bring it up. I'm having a hard time thinking of how to bring it up....

Maybe I need to figure out how to approach my potential models so that they understand what is going on, instead of how to bring it up later?

Just a side laugh:

You'd better stick to one agency (Dreamstime, of course), because imagine if you'd have to get 3 or 4 different releases signed instead of one! That surely scares the hell out of your model - they run, you chase, and in the action spill the pack of papers all over the street. You know, you can never walk that street comfortably again! :)))

Sorry for offtopic.

Demonike you can use a generic model release, that will solve the problem. Just make sure all the info is there.

Does anyone use a generic model release?

Some of the other sites will not accept a generic release.

1 Release would definitely solve a lot of problems and cut down on paperwork.

Any ideas or samples would be great.

For the shyness problem I would say to work with friends to get used to bringing up the subject of signing a release. I have been doing just that because if I dont put it just right we can all have a good laugh about my dumb ways and move on. I guess kinda like practicing for a play in school or such. Just my idea..

Demonike, I downloaded Dreamstime's MR and modified it to make no mention of Dreamstime. I figure that ought to cover me. :)

Mckown, that's what I have been doing, really, but I notice a big difference between friends and strangers. With the average person, they will either sign the release without ever reading it, or they read it and don't understand it and then get scared.

It's too bad there's no articles on how to go about getting the subject broached the easiest and most productive way. :)

If you can't persuade anyone to sign a MR, don't give up if you think this subject fits you.

Try to convince parents or close friends/relatives, even do selfportraits. You can show the work to your potential models, seeing your shots will create a good impression. Don't move on and start shooting people only from their back.
Sometimes face is not important, but I can't help myself not to notice that sometimes great portfolios have problems because all people are having their back turned to the viewer or the shot is framed without a head.

Not saying these shots are bad, but when all your people shots look like this, they will not make a good impression to a potential customer. A good portfolio is not necessarily including people shots, although they are more popular.

Actually, Achilles, I am trying to move away from shooting people only from behind. My friends/family happen to be people who either refuses to allow themselves to be photographed, or if the person won't throw up their hands at the last split second, is absolutely not photogenic. I think self portraits will have to be something I give more thought to. Good idea. Now if only I can make it work... :)

I have noticed that what sells is faces. What I want to shoot is what sells, because then I'm succeeding not only for myself, but for whomever finds my work useful. Once I have the faces down, I'll work on business attire to go with them. :)

I seem to have found a way to approach finding models and getting model releases. It's a combination of approaches I have been told about. First, I posted a flier with tear away tabs at the local college on bulletin boards advertising that I am a student of photography at the school (which I am), and that I am looking for attractive people 18+ to trade time for prints in a portfolio shoot.

I explain that I need to expand my portfolio and they can expand theirs as well. So far I have had one response, but it was someone who turns out to be a gold mine of opportunities, and I found myself approaching the model release quite comfortably with her. I did it in sort of an explanatory way, saying that I need the release in order to be able to use the images, and also that the release is what gives her the right to use the images for herself. I made sure she read and understood it, and asked if she had any questions about it. She found herself with no qualms about signing it.

Perhaps someone can use this information and technique for themselves.

Has anyone here done photography of Amish people here? I heard that they are shy and may not sign a model release much less allow their photo to be taken. I live in in Washington D.C. and there are several Amish communities in Maryland as well as the large community in Pennsylvania.

The Amish do not believe in having their photograph taken. especially the face is a no no. Fotoeye has the olny picts of an Amish which let me take the picts of him farming as long as I took them when he was not "looking" towards the camera. all others I have asked flatly said they would rather I didnt photograph them. " The ones that fotoeye uploaded are 35 mm scanned and arent "good" quality but were accepted. " They dont want things CAPTURED, such as the air in tires so the iron wheels. " I take pics of them at times but do try not to get their face, when they see you are photographing they will look the other way.

That's quite interesting, about the Amish. Maybe you could get some images of Amish young people who are on their time to explore? I understand they spend a year "out in the world" at some point, before deciding how they want to live.

Photographer1773, I have been around the amish since the early 1950's around here. They dont take any time away from their lifestyle. I do have a lot of pics of the kids as they would walk by my photography blind that I would setup on the gravel roadside not knowing what it was or what I was doing inside of it!! " I know, I should not do that and honour their beliefe but,,,, "I've always been a sneeky fellow when it comes to getting that certain picture I want!!!!"

more amish facts .. they cant own a car or a phone but they have no problem bumming a ride to the gas station to use the payphone .. some of them are getting smart and now pay for a phone line to be put in their neighbors barns .. in the neighbors name of course. The rules of their faith just happens to not allow them to have power supplied by the goverment yet it's ok for them to use power tools ran off a generator. Amish owned woodworking businesses try to hide the air hoses along the walls and under shelves along with the power tools and the old fashioned hand tools are laying about .. most likely more for show. They need to be more tricky because they arent hidden good enough. They should probably stop using generic microsoft clipart on the receipts they print up too .. because when they say "lemme go make you a reciept" and then disappear into a back room .. you know where the computer is hidden .. and come back out with standard cheesy clipart plastered on the paper it doesn't look much like the results of an old fashioned typewriter .. but the computer is probably ran off a generator so I guess God doesn't have a problem with that one either. He probably doesn't mind it when they go in the store and buy items that are flat-out microwave only and near impossible to cook on a wood stove. Of course the amish have a store too .. it's full of good ol fashion amish grown and prepared items that people actually drive 100 miles to buy .. those people must not know about the trucks that deliver the items from the distributors warehouse .. they probably dont know about the retarded doctors son here in town that gets paid a couple bucks to make up all the plain looking "amish" packages that the items are put in after they are taken out of their original boxes and wrappings either. And those wood and iron buggy wheels .. those are most likly the primary source of damage to our highways. You can actually follow the grooves they cut in the road from town back to their house. but that's ok because it's their religion and they dont pay taxes for any of it because of that fact. Mine help cover the bill for them.
In short to lie to another person is wrong and a waste of time .. to live that lie and be somebody you are not is just a waste of life itself and to do it in the name of faith .. thats just unforgivable. They need to grow up and pay taxes just like the rest of us.

One more thing for Shannon ... if you don't have the money to sign up to onemodelplace you should go here musecube .. you can contact all the models you want or wait for them to contact you and it's free. The site interface is nice too.
