mysterious astrophotographs

Okay, probably I'm stupid, but there's one thing that's puzzling me.

I personally like astrophotographs very much, but I unfortunately don't have the equipment to produce them (yet)

On DT there are a lot of very good astrophotographs around: planets, comets, galaxies, nebulas, stars, you name it.

I suppose not all of DT photographers have performed regular service on board of the Space Shuttle, and I reckon only a few actually work for NASA. And I certainly don't think some people take pictures of existing pictures in books or "borrow" them from internet ;-)

So, are all these beautiful pictures taken by using very expensive equipment and lenses, or is there a way to "generate" them?

thanks for clarifying this mystery ;-)

Alain.

Images of the moon can be taken with simple telescopes to which you attach the camera through an adapter. The rest of the images are rendered (nebulas, galaxies, other planets, etc).
How they are rendered I don't really know but maybe an illustrator will give you some hints on that. :)

NASA allows to use their images. Usually you can read from copyright notice that they are generally not copyrighted. But that depends on everyone personal conscience if it feels OK, to upload NASA images as they are or not. Some sites allow to use NASA images only as a part of composition.
But I wish I had a space shuttle.
Hope this helps.

@ Maigi
yes, this really helps! I had absolutely no idea the bulk of NASA pictures aren't copyrighted. This explains a lot.

@Nikitu
I'm afraid not a lot of designers will let us in on their little secret ;-)

NASA images cannot be sold in essential manner (i.e. if the marble globe is very significant without too much creative effort from contributor's side - think about a globe on a black background with only a lense flare added in Photoshop). NASA may allow you to use their images for free, but we don't allow a simple upload of a very similar image.

If the globe you downloaded from them is part of a sophisticated composition, with lots of creativeness from your side, yes, you can upload it.

Here is an example (might be a texture generated, not from NASA)

@ Micspix: looks like a lot of work indeed, but results sure are beautiful

@ Achilles: The funny thing is: I decided to do a little test. Not planning to start a row here, but the very first download-for-free picture I ran into on the NASA website, is selling quite well on DT as well ;-) Without the slightest sign of a sophisticated composition. It's exactly the same image, just slighty more highlighted.
But then again, thanks for explaining all of this. Maybe the picture was posted on DT before the DT rules you posted today came into effect. In which case I know one lucky "photographer", won't tell you his of her name in a zillion years ;-)

cheers,

Alain.

You can search www.pbase.com for these photos and also a bit hints.

I create my own space scenes using my 3D software where I create some of my artwork, such as Saturn, Jupiter and the moon to name a few, I also take photos of the stars etc... but for some reason DT don't seem to like them as stars just look like black backgrounds on their site without viewing the image in full!

Cheers

Well i'm a moon shooter for the moment :D i know some people that shot to planets, nebulae and so on and actually images are really processed... they take hours to get a good image. That's becaue all depends from the sensor you're using and the noise is always really high. To avoid this problem you can use several programs that stack images together....but it's a really long process. Good photos can be taken also with a non professional equipment...you need a good mount and a good refractor telescope ( that means spending about 2000-4000€....3000-6000$)
Hope you understand ;)
