I have only done a few weddings but have to agree that an engagement shoot before a wedding is beneficial in providing an opportunity to work with the couple, relax them, and get to know them in a less formal setting. You as the photographer can be more creative without the pressure of time or family. My experience has been that the engagement images have been as good and as appreciated by the couples as the actual wedding images. I suspect most designers know the concept they are looking for and search on specific items in the image they want to use that highlights the concept.
