Photoshop or other bitmap post process programs are the essential "digital darkroom". You can go without it, but with it you may improve the results (or even worsen it when abused). But then again, great pictures taken without the post processing always give self satisfying ego, and that is the real challenge for the mass community of amateur or hobbyist photographers (including me). posted in photoshop
