Geographic and Ceremonial South Pole

The Geographic South Pole is marked with a brass marker designed and manufactured by the staff of the South Pole Amundsen-Scott research base. Because of the movement of the ice sheet each year a new marker is made and relocated on New Years Day to the current location of the Geographic South Pole. A ceremony is held to celebrate the occasion. Located nearby is the Ceremonial South Pole with the familiar “barber pole” marker surrounded by the flags of the original signatory nations of the Antarctic Treaty.
