The famous overhead bridge built in the XVII century was for long a causeway between freedom and incarceration as it connected the Doge's palace and its courts with the prison. Built in gothic style and made famous through Casanova and Lord Byron, it acquired a tragic identity, which luckily is nowadays a faded memory being replaced by strong romantic symbolism.
