Mesa Verde Ruins 2

A section of the Spruce Tree House ruins at Mesa Verde National Park in Colorado. The sticks you see poking up in the foreground are the top of a ladder which leads down into a covered chamber called a Kiva. Kivas were used for ceremonial purposes. The ancient Anasazi people built these cliff dwellings some 700 to 800 years ago.
