The white limestone tufas of Mono Lake, a salty lake with water three times saltier than the ocean, in the Great Basin east of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, in California, are a popular tourist destination. These grotesque pinnacles formed where freshwater springs flowed into the alkaline waters, and have been exposed by the receding shoreline. Birdwatchers frequent this wetlands area as thousands of birds stop here to feed along the Pacific Flyway.
