Problem with Canon 580EX flash

I recently purchased a used Canon 580EX flash (EX1, not EX2). It seemed to work fine on my Canon 400D body for about 20-30 shots, then suddenly all shots came out almost completely dark as if the flash was not used although the flash did fire. It was using ETTL, master/slave set to OFF, all CF's set to 0's and wasn't using high speed sync or 2nd curtain. It was used on-camera, not off-camera. The camera was set to manual mode, f/4.0, 1/60s and ISO200. Also tried other shutter speeds, e.g. 1/20s, 1/80s, 1/200s etc and all came out "black". When I switched back to my Canon 430EX flash, the same shots with exact same camera settings came out okay and properly exposed.

Anyone had the same issue or knows what maybe the issue?

I have same EX580 flash, but never had such problems. Try your flash on different Camera to see if the flash is still working at all. And try to reset settings on flash. The problems is that your flash doesnt properly sinchronize with your camera, it fires too early or too late...

Do you have the option to try the flash on another camera body? You could always try asking at a local camera shop if you can try the flash on one of their display cameras, just to see if it works okay on a different body.

Then you'll know if it's the flash or just something to do with your camera and that particular flash.

It was odd that the 430EX never gave me this problem (*knock* *knock*) and the 580EX had worked for 20-30 shots before acting up. It did seem like a flash synchronization problem as the flash did fire (and was bright enough to almost turn me blind when I looked at the flash when it fired off) but the camera apparently didn't capture the light. I was using it on-camera (not off-camera with same ebay wireless flash trigger), using shutter speeds 1/200s or slower, so the flash should be able to sync with it but maybe communication between the flash and body was partially broken. I did notice that the flash's foot might be a bit weak and can wobble a tiny bit when mounted on my camera body (but maybe it was just psychological after having the problem and couldn't figure out what went wrong with it). Maybe it had a loose contact or a loose wire.

The seller was kind enough to meet me again and let me refund it. I'm waiting to hear back from him on whether it works on his 5D body.

From what I see, it already has the latest official firmware, 1.1.1, which hasn't changed for a long time. Or are you talking about a hacked firmware?

It sounds like possibly a sync problem. Did you have any problems when you shot the flash with manual Flash? Try wiping the contacts of the flash and camera and see if that helps.

I've the same firmware 1.1.1 and the EX580 flash too without problems. So, the firmware cann't be the problem. I hope you get it working. Good luck!

When I tried the flash with manual mode, it seemed to go full powerful no matter what output setting it was set to, e.g. 1/128, and overexpose everything (almost completely white).

Thanks. I've returned the flash to the seller and got back my money. I haven't heard from him since then. Then I went on a trip with my 430EX. Just curious in what could have caused the problem.

What happens when you use it full manual with the ebay triggers? Still at full power even at 1/128? I think if it is still doing full power with ebay triggers and manual 1/128, then seems like circuit problem with flash.

Yes, I tried the 580EX in manual mode (output set to 1/128) with an ebay trigger (CTR-301) and it did seem to go full power. I needed to adjust my 45" white shoot-through umbrella about 1 ft higher and at least 1 ft farther away and use f/8, 1/200s and ISO100 to keep the picture from going overexposed.

Oh, and yes I did try wiping the contact on the flash mount and the hot shoe and it didn't make any difference.

Yeah something did seem to be wrong with the flash after the first 20-30 shots. Maybe internally a wire or some contact got loose when I put the camera on vertical position and the flash was pointing horizontally.
