Question about the search engine

I'm not sure if this is a bug, or it it is supposed to be this way, but I am running into a minor issue when I search for images. Case in point:

I am working on a project for a client right now that requires a fairly detailed vector illustration of a movie theater. I type in "movie theater" in the seach field, select "illustrations", and hit the search button. The result is that I have to wade through several initial pages of nearly identical images from the same contributor, none of which I need for this particular project.

If I am under a time crunch (as most designers are), this is a major pain. I want to see a variety of images - not an entire series from one contributor.

A more annoying instance of this happened to me the other day, using a different search term. I'm not going to name any names, or identify what my search term was, but I had to skip over the first 6 pages because they were all nearly identical images from the same contributor! Admins, please feel free to contact me privately if you would like more info.

Is anyone else noticing this in their searches?

I did the same search and I see your point: Lots of images of red curtains. I don't know if this is indicative of problems with the new search, but you might try checking 'only vector/RAW' instead of 'illustrations' since you are looking for a vector. I did that and got better results.

Still, I agree with you, a search on 'illustrations' should produce more varied results, including 3D renders of movie theaters.
I use Illustrator and Photoshop CS3. Also assorted 3D softwa...

Dear Scott,

It is not a bug. The search engine is currently set by default to "relevancy" which is why you may find a lot of similar illustrations. You can change the search criteria by selecting other options on the top right dropdown menu and the results for "movie theater" and get different results. Hope it helps.

Ah yes - refining my search via the options offered in the advanced search tab does seem to eliminate the clutter. For whatever reason I didn't notice it before...

Thanks!

Showing several images of the same contributor against hundreds of other contributors images isn't relevant, and DEFAULT results should be RELEVANT when RELEVANCY is selected.

For me it is a wrong default setting.

That's what i was talking about herehere.

But seems no one cares and the idea is too fresh.

Dear Artur,

Relevancy is all about the most accurate information provided by members on their images (title, description, keywords and categories). Just by picking an example from one of your most popular images "CRAPS TABLE", you will see that the results are quite opposite from your statement. It just happens that your image is second on the list on first page (sorted by relevancy).

I have tried this movie theater thing, and its really funny. No, its not funny when customer is bored. Its the opposite of customer friendly telling him how he have to search. Search engine has to meet customers need, not the other way round!

@Rolmat .. unfortunately i think it shows i'm right.

Enter also e.g VIRUS or FLORA or search more, cause i don't remember now what terms was used by me when i've noticed that search results 'error' - cause for me it's a bug or wrong assumption.

DT team is always talking about results diversity but the engine allows to put multiple images from same portfolio among thousands images.

And i think that CRAPS TABLE proves that i don't think about myself - just about RELEVANCY.

As a /buyer/search engine user/ i would like to have 40 images from 40 contributors and then select one to find more, and not 40 images from 5 contributors, and that is happening sometimes.

And as @Scuba13 said You can have then go through same visually SIMILAR images by the same contributor using flash browser, what is annoying.

So my point is to avoid multiple results from single portfolio as a DEFAULT (of course if there are MANY results).

Avoid doesn't mean to not 'in mix' these later on.

Yep, it's really annoying!

Right now, tweaking the search engine sound like a "trial & error" to me. Did the programmer on DT check them first "off-line" (how they going to look like) before hitting the "go" button?

I recall that DT wish to delete similar images from their collections. Perhaps this way, DT can easily find the contributors with their "so-many" similar images and can quickly do the "chop off" then ;)

Also, the big recent changes wish the search engine could favor "Quality images" more. I don't see this going to work as a bunch of similar images from one contributor can not be considered as their "Best Quality image".

However, if the buyer get annoyed, they still could get the "Quality images" through "downloads-descending" which shows "Popular images" (old but best seller).

Then, for the "New-Quality images", their battle field will ONLY be in "upload date-descending". Skip the "resolution-descending", as this also belongs to the "Professionals" with higher "quality" camera.

Hmm.. sounds not a good scheme for a new comer with a tiny gear like myself.. LOL

Hope my thought is wrong.

   Bottles in a tray

This is my image. This week, it got one download with key word "alternative Therapy"

So, out of curiosity, i wanted to check, on what page it comes, on searching with these key words.

I checked for about 5 or 6 pages with 80 images per page, and what i saw was the something, which is this thread is talking about.

I could not see my image. I think the buyer may have used some search criteria, and found my image.

I am happy with my image sale, but, author of this thread has a valid point.
