I also use a Canon G9. When I just want to have a camera with me and don't want to bring my D90. I would never use it for a planned shoot. It is perfect to grab objects for composite imaging.

Here is one with the G9:

When i first started I submitted a lot of pics with the old Canon a85 powershot.

2 of them got approved.

I bought a Nikon d40 just before it was Getting out of the Market for only 299 E

When it comes to compact Cams I also have e i590S Canon. (not suitable for stock).

The Nikon d40 gives great results.

My wife take pictures with her´s Powershot SD 850, many we have uploaded here and are selling well.

The trick is you must take them with ISO 100 and post process the minimum, i.e., the image should be as perfect as possible right from the camera.

The "serious" work, I do with my Canon 50D, of course, but she has a keen eye and I like many of her´s pictures, we just have to be more selective so that we wont have rejections for noise, flare, ..., you know what I mean.

Now, I am trying to convince her to move to a Canon S90, which has a larger sensor and lighter lens, that might help with the noise a bit, she does not want to move to another brand.

Some other brands, though, have come with cameras with sensors DSLR size in compact cameras, those are good for stock at most times, I think, like Panasonic GF-1.

Let me post some of her´s pictures for you to know what you can do with a compact camera.

The Painted Ladies    I love this picture from her, the Painted Ladies from San Francisco.

Los Angeles Downtown    This is another classic one.

Palace of Fine Arts, San Francisco    Not much to say, with the perfect lighting, the perfect picture.

New York 5th Avenue    Classic New York City cabs...

All those are from that tiny Canon Powershot SD, impressive, isnt it?

Of course, I would encourage any one who wants to do microstock to go for a DSLR, we have countless great images that we simply could not upload because of technical issues, but, its tiny and you can take it anywhere!

Have the greatest time!

I use a Canon IXUS 870 IS

not the best of digital cameras, but it can sell some photos.

can check my portfolio to see what I'm talking about.

Sometime its not all about equipment and how expensive it is, but it is merely just correct composition and adjustments in photoshop.

but I'd really prefer a DSLR for stock photography.

Panasonic FZ50, very nice camera. One needs to make sure not to use it above ISO 100 and need to have a lot of light. Achieved a few level 2 images with it. I uploaded in the past images taken with Panasonic FZ20 but I don't think they would be accepted today.

canon's latest g models can compete with dslrs in good lighting conditions. Same applies for most recent compact cameras from nikon etc. You coul check the exif data (tools tab) of some popular&recent images to see what cameras were they shot with. And remember most are also post processed.

I have a few photos in my port that were taken with a Fuji FinePix900 that have had some sales. You can get excellent quality with compact cameras, and it can be a good idea to work with those camera once in a while for stock because you have to know your stuff and not rely on the camera to do all the work for you. It's pretty good training.

Years ago I had to buy photos for a show my husband was doing, and my only option was to go with one of the big RM stock agencies. Microstock hadn't yet taken off. I was surprised when I read the EXIF on a photo that cost us $300 and discovered it had been taken with an early model compact (Canon, of course:-). The image quality was excellent. I suspect that the photographer was also excellent at his or her craft.

My DSLR shots far outnumber my compact camera shots, but when it is inconvenient to carry an SLR I use a Canon G10. This is probably my best selling compact camera shot (Level 2):

   Child playing hockey

I agree that a compact camera can rival an SLR in good lighting conditions, but the SLR has the advantage of speed, shallow depth of field (with the right lenses), interchangeable lenses, lower noise, etc. I would never plan a shoot with my compact over my DSLR unless portability was a major factor...

I used canon G3 before I bought DSLR. What I noticed is that rejections due to technical reasons (noise,articfacting,..) have been reduced significally after switching to DSLR. But the files that were accepted are selling equally well as the ones from DSLR.
