Database cleaning

We've been receiving suggestions from many contributors about a database cleaning. Since 2007 Dreamstime has the largest growth in the industry. Although our submission procedure allows us to retrieve only the best content, there are still images that simply don't sell. The selection criteria increased significantly and the quality of recent imagery has significant improvements from one week to the next. It's time for a clean-up.

We plan to select all images that are older than 3 or 4 years old and had no sales. Each contributor who has such images will receive an email upon the initial selection.

The files will still be available for sale for one more month. During this month, the contributor will have to decide whether he wants to donate the image to the free section, re-keyword it via keymasters or simply disable it.

If the image is donated, the exposure received may increase his commercial sales. This was debated many times, so please check the forums for more details. We expect a few thousand to be donated to the free section which will strengthen our community overall.

If the image is keyworded (only via keymasters), it will be removed from this area and its date reseted. A good image may be saved by different keywords. Considering this is a paid option, the contributor will have to consider well which of the files truly have potential.

This procedure should clean the database. Common subjects will see many files removed, allowing new&better submissions to take their place.

As always, your feedback is welcome.

Hi Achilles, my files will not be involved in this process because they have less than 2 year but I think this is a wise choice.

"Old images with no sales"

For me, this condition is really good.

"Common subjects will see many files removed, allowing new and better submissions to take their place"

I agree with this.

Thumb up!

These will be images that were 'uploaded' more than 3-4 years ago --- correct? I am a new contributor and uploaded some images this year that were shot a few years ago. These are images I consider 'oldies but goodies' and would hope that they receive a fair chance.

I do agree that images that have been on the site for several years without any sales should be removed. I am also a stock buyer and it is frustrating having to sort through poor images to find good ones.

Another compeditive site that does this pays the contributor &.50 / photo to move it to the free photo section. Is this a possibility?

I generally agree with this, but...

There might be some situations where an automated process might not be the best thing.

To ilustrate: Doing a search for 'weevil' results on a search that shows less than a dozen weevil files downloaded, all but one were downloaded only once. These files might not be that much saleable, but there are not that many good images on this subject and removing them because they have no downloads at the present will make DT collection poorer, with no options whatsoever on this specific theme. There are several hundred views however in many files.

If DT deletes many closely related specific themes potencialy is sending away some potencial clients that would also buy other pics if they would see DT as a complete database image agency they would come back to.

There's some tradeoff between the overall collection quality, the resources it takes and the average money generated by pics.
Average revenue can certainly be raised by deleting older, never downloaded files, but certainly some total revenue will also decrease. And older never downloaded files does not always mean poor quality.

Maybe taking into account the number of views could minimize this effect, or maybe files to be deleted being evaluated one by one, not on the level of approving queue, just so that high quality files won't be deleted.

Just some issues to think about.

yeh the cleanup is most probably a good thing

Howver, i do not see how 1000 or so new images in the free section will help in any way... surely it means that instead of buying from photographers portfolios clients would be able to download similar quality images for free

Eventually there will be everything anyone needs in the 'free' section...

how does that work??

it does happen that if a client likes the 'style' of the free image, they may jump into the who portfolio for a little peek. So instead of scanning through hundreds or thousands of images, the client gets to see ONLY your stuff for a moment. sort of like driving past a billboard on a highway.. only a few seconds to see what is being advertised, but it has your full attention.
as a side note, i think the database should be dropping all images which are level 2 or greater. that would give most of my images a greater chance of showing up the searches... but i digress to silliness for a moment.
