Blogs, blogs, blogs!

Recently, a friend I've made here at Dreamstime sent me a message asking why I haven't been posting much to the message boards recently. The main reason is that so many people seem to post their comments and questions as "blogs" rather than as simple message threads. Currently, there are 22 "new threads" listed. Of those, 17 have been posted as "blogs." I used to read the occasional blog but now I don't bother, partially since most of the so-called blogs aren't even blogs.

My objection to these false blog postings is twofold. When I try to open a message posted as a blog, I have to first click on the message title to open the thread. Since I can't see the message there, only the responses, I then have to open the blog in a new window, often only to find that it is something that would have fit neatly into a message category -- and also to find that it's something in which I have no interest.

Which brings me to my second issue: lack of categorizing. When I look at new threads when they're messages in categories, I can usually look at the category under each and tell if it's a business related question/comment or if it's something whimsical. With these so-called blogs, there are no categories, so I have to open each one (since they're often not well titled) to see what type of posting it is. I often just don't have time to do that, so recently I usually just haven't bothered checking the new threads at all. When I do, I've gotten to the point where I only look at those few posts that are part of a true thread and not blogs.

What's the point of all this, you might ask? Please, if your blog is actually a blog, then by all means post it as such. But if it's really just a question, suggestion, observation, etc. on which you want the input of others, please post it accordingly and you'll probably get more and better responses.

Here, here, I totally agree with you.

The old cynic in me thinks that the only reason all these so-called blogs are being written is an attempt to earn the free credit for writing a useful blog.

As you rightly say, many blogs are far from useful. I hope the truly useful ones are being rewarded though.

I agree, too.

I don't care if a blog is 'interesting' or not, but the flooding of the board with them is a bit too much for me, too.

I agree as well.

I think that blogs should NOT be posted in the threads. By doing so you'll eliminate people using blogs for questions etc. Then 'true' blogs will be kept alive and more useful as well.

Cheers,

Paul.

I'm a regular blogger here, but personally don't find the inclusion of blogs on the message boards helpful, either. I liked it better when they were separate. One could hit the boards for questions, or the blog section for whimsy :)

I find myself hitting specific categories to see recent posts there, rather than the main New Threads area, due to all the blogs that appear.

Was there a request or reason for including blogs onto the message boards? Seems unneeded having blogs be included in the message boards especially with the amount of blogs posted.

I too no longer use the “new thread” option for the message board, hey; I do enjoy some of the blogs and when I want to see the blog page, it is simple enough to find it with its own tab.

PS - Anne, always a pleasure to read your posts, cheers!

It looks as if the blog overload has become 'blog clog'. :)

We'll be removing these from the "latest threads" link and the similar pages, while keeping them solely under the blogs forum. While our intention was to avoid community segregation it's true that they outnumber the threads now. Will keep an eye on them and see what happens.

Yep, message boards have been getting a tad overcrowded with blog notices, most of which are simply four line blogs containing little useful information - of course, there are some great blogs and bloggers out there, so long may they continue....in the right place!

For someone who likes to add useful information to the Dreamstime in the form of a blog, I think this will be a good idea. That way Blogs that are designed to be usefull information will get the noticed by the people who want to read them.

Thank you, Achilles. I was so pleasantly surprised to wake up this morning and find that the "new threads" were really just that -- new threads. It's so helpful and very appreciated.

Will someone please just tell me what a THREAD is - I know, this must

Wikipedia: Internet Forum - Threads

Thread

A thread (sometimes called a topic) is a collection of posts, usually displayed from oldest to latest. A thread is defined by a title, an opening statement or question to get the discussion going (common abbreviation 'OP', which can also mean original poster) that opens whatever dialogue or makes whatever announcement the poster wishes. A thread can contain any number of posts, including multiple posts from the same members, even if they are one after the other. A thread's popularity is measured on forums in reply counts.

Thank you, Red (Betsy) for enlightening me about THREADS. Now if only I could

figure out how the many other aspects of Dreamstime's blogging and commenting

features work I'd be truly happy (lol). Cheers, LEE

I fully agree about the Blog´s, they are not the same as messages, the tool is very good, specially for telling a story, or sharing some information with others, but they are not for starting a discussion, that´s what messages are for.
