Canon EOS-M Mirrorless system announced: Preview

Interesting start, but not very compelling in my opinion relative to other mirrorless options. Still, a nice addition to an EOS system with the pair of pancake lenses. This is clearly an initial model with more advanced ones to come... What do you think?

Isn't it enough to just read the comments under the preview, some of which I copy-paste here, for the fun of it :)

Quote 0. As a Canon rebel 350 D then 550D userI had been waiting to see what Canon mirrorless offered before proceeding to micro four thirds as that system now offers quality acceptable to me. The appeal of M4/3rds being the weight of the lenses especially long zooms. Increasingly I have been using a travel compact and leaving the Canon system at home. The use of the APC sensor means no significant weight reduction for longer zoom lenses compatable with this system. My move from Canon to M4/3 rds proceeds

Quote 1. I think they did do well with the body design and it should appeal to Christmas shoppers at big box stores. The salesmen will talk it up because it's a Canon.

Quote 2. they launch this on a bright sunny day when users of their new system may not be able to compase photos due to reflections on the screen.

Quote 3. It does not have flash!! then it is no for me :) hello Pentax / Sony :)

Quote 4. Canon has a huge following worldwide and an offering for someone who wants more than a mobile phone, but not DSLR, this should sell in reasonable numbers. The photographer in the family will buy DSLR's, but the 'significant other' will want something more suited to their mobile phone style, of which millions if not billions are now using.

Quote 5. The casual shooters represent a far larger market and are still shelling out good money for their toys.

...

Quote #. Loving all the no idea commenter's on here. It wouldn't matter if they brought out a full fame 11fps with 61 focus points that have full manual video control and Hollywood would buy into. You just like to have a good old moan like the grumpy old men/ and women you are. Next you'll be saying that a £39 Vivitar is the camera of the future.

Well, choose your side! ;-)

ps: Brad, sorry for a non-informative "comment", it's just so funny to read all these opinions... hopefully for you too. :)

I agree, the comments are pretty silly, but fun to read. My favorite comment: "I notice that all these pro-Canon boosters have never learned to use paragraphs."

LOL, This can well apply to my quotes, even though I am no "pro-Canon booster". The only excuse for me not keeping the original text splitting is that I tried to keep the space per quote to the minimum.

Well - it has Manual mode, Hot-shoe, APS-C sized sensor, supports RAW... from my point of view it is not absolutely hopeless... and with EF mount adapter might be even considered a pocket-sized backup body...
It's just a little bit strange to imagine EF 70-200 L F2.8 mounted on it :)))

I think that the initial launch signals a few things that are promising, and a few things that are not:

1. Sensor is APS-C. They have ruled out a full frame mirrorless with this mount. This is positive given the large base of EF lenses.
2. They have released a camera with phase detect on the sensor - so the mirrorless system can benefit from that with existing and new lenses. I haven't played with one, but for some reason the 22mm pancake is not reported to have fast AF for whatever reason. This seems likely to improve over time.
3. Good video spec. They have good video capabilities in this camera. To me video is a large part of the advantage of mirrorless, though an EVF would make it much better.
4. Wireless control of flash is good.
5. The best thing about this camera, I think, is that it signals Canon's intent to build up a mirrorless system around an APS-C sensor. If I still shot Canon it would be enough to make me wait for the next body before jumping ship :)

Not so promising:

1. No IS in pancake prime. I get why Canon puts it in the lens, but don't get why they wouldn't have IS in their only M mount specific prime, nor the new 40mm pancake - both obvious lens choices. They did put it in the new 24mm and 28mm wide angles - but those are more expensive lenses.
2. It is nice that they are releasing STM lenses for video use, but this also means that all the existing lenses need an update, or will have noise if focused in video.
3. No EVF port. I don't see any reason to think this rule out an EVF on future models. When you think of it a touchscreen interface and an EVF are sort of incompatible. You need buttons and dials to change settings with your eye to the camera... So not so good that they didn't include an EVF port on this body or the G1X, but not ruled out. Olympus didn't have an EVF on their first PEN either (but you'd think Canon would learn from that).
4. Pricey. Why is this camera more expensive that the high end Rebels which have a lot of extra stuff built in? If they bundled this with the 40mm and 22mm I think a lot of people would go for it just to get the deal on the 40mm, but i don't see amateurs going for a prime only. I can see my Grandpa now - "I got a cool new Canon camera, but can't find the zoom switch"?

So the format looks promising for Canon, but they need to do a lot to pull me back from Olympus :)
