If you're new to Photoshop, here's a short video tip to selective desaturate a photo.
Selective Desaturation
I tried to keep it short and simple. Below is a quick summary on the technique:
1.) Create a new Black & White adjustment layer (Windows > Adjustments > Black & White)
2.) Use the Brush Tool (B) and paint black on the White Mask of the new Black & White adjustment layer
3.) If you want to view only the Mask, press and hold down Option (Alt) then click on the Mask
4.) If you make a mistake painting outside of the desire area, switch the paint from black to white

It's a great tip about how to desaturate non-destructively.
But usually it's better to upload original photos on the site, and let the manipulations for designers, who know exactly what they want to highlight on the photo. Sometimes I have noticed that I have had no idea how my photo could be used.
If you manipulate your photo by yourself, you have to do a really good job, or your might decrease the number of your potential buyers. Another idea could be to upload both versions of photo - original and manipulated, so designers can have more choices.
But your tip is great, if you want to produce the final product.

Because that is exactly the look i am looking for to use on mypeople shoots. I want all of the color but everything other than the subject to be much less intense in color. I can get much of it with lighting but just not good enough. THANKS FOR THE TUTORIAL !

@mudplucker The only thing I did on that photo in Photoshop was using a orange filter. I might of use the screen blend mode and lower the opacity around 20-30%. As far as lighting, I use a 24x34 softbox and a 27 octobox. Hope this helps. |

Thanks for taking the extra time with providing me info. I've got the 3 softboxes and 2 remote flash units with controllers, and get an "octobox" effect of diffusion if i can figure out exactly how to do it in my small room. Make more people shots, your photos and lighting are top notch ! |
