Heat damage to sensors - useful info

I was recently trying to monitor UV and IR radiations throughout the daytime and night time as a part of an investigatory project. I had heat sensors able to withstand about 800 C and used various lenses to get an accurate average result.

The side result was this, after consulting some camera manuals:
Sensor damage begins after the sensor faces more than a maximum specified amount of heat for more than a maximum amount of specified endurance time.

Condition (at aperture f/5.6) ----- Permanent sensor damage starts after around

wide angle lens, sun in clear view ---- 10s
Telephoto lens, sun in clear view ---- 7s
moon in clear view, wide angle lens ---- 192s
telephoto lens, moon in clear view ---- 136s

general sunlit scenery, wide angle ---- 3 minutes
general sunlit 50% gray subject, telephoto ---- 2.6 minutes

The values are based on APS-C sensor and CCD device specifications. Take care that you stay well below these exposure levels to avoid damaging your sensor permanently.

This is interesting. Thank's for sharing.

But the information seem to be of no practical use, in my opinion. Since nobody will use, e.g., 3 min exposure for 'general sunlit scenery' - anyway, to get an image, one actually needs exposures that are 1000, 10,000 and 100,000 times shorter.

Good work and good to know, thanks.
Igor, my Nikon have LiveView, in this mode the sensor is exposed more than 3 minutes frequently because after starting liveview I start to adjust my horse position in frame accordingly. This take about 10 minutes because is a wild horse. After that, I must put myself on the horse in the picture - another 15 minutes (I wear heavy armour). So, if my sensor is still alive, is because of Nikon's auto switching off function.

Thank Pindiyath, I am here to bring smiles, love and peace to everybody. When no-sale day come, I am here for all angry people! Just read my posts! :-) There are 50/50% chances to become more angry :-)
Is my pleasure also to introduce you:
- Igordabari, my Chief Astronomer & Scientist First Advisor. His studies here, on DT, worth gold pieces multiplicated with the number of letters.
- Robinstockphotos, a young scientist in charge with weird experiments. I pay big money for his hardware requests but, as you can see, he bring amazing results. Will be hired soon on full time job. He have a new camera and don't hesitate to put it in full sun for us. Next experiment will be at 200 feets underwater. Only a Canon user can do this! :-)

A male version? Tell me more. You signed here as a female and after first upload you become male?! I don't have scientist specialized on such things... Waiting some clarifications ASAP. Don't contact support, they will put you to change the W-8 form or God know what else!

At f/1.4 I think the sensor will burn in flames after just seconds :-) From today, only studio shoots and night photography.

@Alvera...you keep making me laugh eh!!! :) The account was started by me (Sanjay) back in 2004 and I went hiding. Then back in 2009 my better half (Susana) took over and now we're both doing it together. With the addition of expected and unexpected new equipments all we need now is TIME and some reasonable imagination. :)

@ Pindiyath100 - nice to hear that your wife is helping you. My wife does not. She hate cables all over the house, lightboxes hanging on the ceiling, tripods extended on full lenghts and laying on the dark road to bathroom at night time, li-ion batteries in the fridge etc. Please tell Susana to share some positive thinking and advices, I will forward to my wife. Thanks a lot.

@Igor - my white horse read this message board too, please say no more about black horses :-(

I didn't burn my camera. haha! Got some about-to-be-disposed junk lenses for a day from a friend.

Your majesty, I suggest you shoot black horses at night from inside an at least 20 feet swamp to effectively reduce heating hazards. Also wear a knight's helmet so that no stray light enters through the viewfinder.

If you still get rejections, it is probably due to white balance errors caused by -230K gamma radiations from the nearby galaxies and radio waves from pulsars. In this rejection case, please do not contact support.
Contact NASA.

thanks for taking the time to do the experiments, if only you had done them a few days ago before I tried some long exposures, ended the shoot with a lot of damaged pixels. Luckily nothing permanent but need to pay more attention from now. Off to the swamps for the next shoot.

My point of view: dead or hot pixel are good, in the astrophotography you can see a lot of red shifted stars and give them your name. Like NGC 6751 ALVERA, G290.5+07.9 KING, etc. Someday I'll have my own star, a dead pixel with my name :)

Out of sensor sensitivity range. Do not care, only increase my income up to 12,000/week for the correct answer and never allow your white horse to read my posts.

I don't understand why Moon exposures are only 20x longer than sun exposures? Moon is 400,000x brighter then Sun, and has the same angular size, so the exposure ratio should be more like 100,000, not 20?

Pulsar
The sensors registered about 1/20th intensity of the wavelength that most effectively causes charge leakages and increases rate of temporary sensor malfunction and erratic behavior. Prolonged exposure beyond this level affects the main semiconductor layer and rearranges silicon wafer at the subatomic levels which causes the output current to be irresponsive of light input. That is how you get those white spots.

For the moon, I have used average values. It depends on a lot of other factors. My values are the SAFEST estimates.
Anyway, why do bulb exposure with the moon? Crazy idea.

Really interesting info. One question... if you are doing an shot and have the mirror up to get a steadier shot, is this exposing the sensor the entire time the mirror is up? And will studio light cause damage to the sensor if you are pointing directly at them with the mirror up?!
