Hey there

I am a new contributor and I wanted to start a discussion where some of the more successful members of the Dreamstime community could possibly give some insight on how they have experienced success in creating more views for their images as well as generating more sales.

Let the discussion begin...

Do good, exceptional work. Stand out from the rest. Keyword properly.

There are going to be those who say you should Tweet images, Facebook, Pinterest, blog. That is bad advice. Social media is a waste of your time. And I expect to be flamed for saying so. *shrug*

There are many ways in which you can promote your portfolio, but first you should focus on building one.

Yes, no doubt that quality is more important than quantity. However, you need to provide a more diversified portfolio, targeting a larger audience, in order to have more chances to sell.

Not only it's a waste of your time, in my limited experience, but youll annoy a lot of your friends!

I'm just an old beginner but I subscripe to this: "Do good, exceptional work. Stand out from the rest. Keyword properly."

Just one observation: equipment is, unfortunatelly for those who aren't rich, very important too. You can have the heart and the eye of an artist (I know I have them) but if you don't have a decent camera etc. you'll get - as I do - a lot of rejection because of "poor lenses quality, chromatic aberation" and such...

What to do then, when you cannot afford to invest in a 1500-2000 USD camera (at least) in order to earn, maybe, in a couple of years, a couple of hundred USD?

It's not about likes number. It's about share. Tell your friends not to give likes, but to share your images. Likes are for glory :)

Get yourself an editor's choice, if you want views, but take a look at the current editor's choice images and you will see that views don't equate to sales. This is the mystery on DT - with so many subscriptions, presumably with unused room, why don't buyers scoop up new images???

Bradleyvdw, first is to build your portfolio.

You need diversity, quality and quantity. Also, good keywords.

You can tweet your image so they will be indexed faster in the search engines and get some views as well.

Later, you can start worrying about using the social media to promote your portfolio, its not a waste of time, it will bring some buyers straight to your collections either directly from the social media or through searches using a search engine like google.

Linking your images from DT directly to social media I think doesnt work much, maybe that is a waste of time and will annoy your friends, you need a different strategy IMO.

If you want to take a look of what I´ve been doing, check my google+ page.

Still, its only worth it if you have a portfolio to show, otherwise, stick to the plan, add diversity, quality and quantity with good keywords.

BTW, views here in DT are not so much related to sales, several reasons for that, but just don´t bother.

The only thing to be worried about is when an image has no views at all, it means its not yet indexed by the search engines, after that, dont worry, just check if they have sales, that´s what matter.

And the golden rule is this: LEARN FROM YOUR KING how to properly give a Title to a photo!

Everybody know that your king (that's me, Baloo :)) is an expert TitleMaster. If you don't believe, please look with your own eyes. This photo got a sale today, look at "Title" and "Buyer searched after".

A great Title

(my modesty is proverbial)

edit: also, at this time, the image have Views: 1 & Downloads: 1.

Im on the fence with this site, it seems you have to win the approval of the gods who may not see your vision but everyday people do, so to answer this question you posted is a difficult one because if this was the real world and you had 1,000 people come by and look and say wow we love it and take that same image here and they would be like poor lighting poor this or poor that and then you get discourage, so don't lose who you are for this site, there are plenty of other sites where they don't act like they are pros working for nat geo and they have to take time from their busy schedule to look at your work
