Mobile phone photos are hot, how do buyers find that category here?

"...we have added a new category “Mobile” which you can select when keywording shots taken with mobile phones."

Like it or not, with these types of photos becoming more desireable (other agencies) how does a buyer find this category here? It is not listed in the Categories Tab. Maybe I'm missing a step? I'm not even sure how to search by category, it is not in the Advanced Search menu.

Hi. The first Tab under the dreamstime logo is Categories (up-left). Click on it, then click on Abstract and the last one is Mobile. I think this is hard for a new buyer. Maybe an alphabetical order will be better?

Odd, I see the categories in alphabetical order, but Mobile is not one of the choices. Guessing Red is seeing the same as me. /shrug

In Abstract you can see this:

Refine by subcategory : Blurs, Competition, Craftsmanship, Danger, Exploration, Help, Luxury, Peace, Power, Purity, Security, Sports, Stress, Success, Teamwork, Unique, Backgrounds, Religion, Textures, Love, Seasonal & Holiday, Fun, Colors, Planetarium, Mobile

I see. Thanks for pointing that out. That is confusing. As a new buyer what would make me even think that there were subcategories? I would see them only if I clicked on the main ones. I would take a look at the ones listed and if I didn't see one that suited me I would do a search instead. I'm not sure that Mobile belongs in Abstract. I believe it should be it's own category because it could include any or all of the others. It could be a landscape, person, object, place - really anything taken with a cell phone instead of a camera. Odd.

Agreed - it does seem misplaced somehow. As well, I find it odd that while you can have images in the category that aren't taken by mobile phones (as long as they fit the mobile theme), you can also have images taken by mobile phones of anything. It creates a pretty eclectic mix of stuff as some people are actually submitting 'normal' studio type shots with phones :) While it is cool that people can taken classic looking shots with phones, I don't see that being all that relevant to a buyer looking for 'mobile' imagery.

It would make more sense if, as you say, 'mobile' was a category of its own - then you could break out the studio stuff in a subcategory. Studio, lifestyle, people, etc.

My people, I will wait for this problem to be solved till next year. After this, I will show myself a tyrant. I will call for webmaster & web designer and I will cut off their heads. The King has spoken. Howgh!

I think that Mobile should be a look, not anything taken with a mobile phone. Alphabetizing with a sublist under Abstract doesn't solve the problem. We all know what the mobile look is these days and it is all over advertising, tv and movies (opening titles). Instagram is probably a copyrighted name but that is what is hot. The mobile phone look doesn't even have to be taken with a phone, it can be created with filters. I say give the buyers what they want without making it harder than it is now when trying to find them. Someone should take the time to lump photos with this new hip look (I guess that "hip" isn't what is said today, I'm dating myself) in a special category. At the same time good photos taken with mobile phones that don't have the "look" should be removed from the category. I guarantee that there would be sales if only the buyers could find these photos easier.

I guess I'll have to figure out what the mobile look is exactly.
Seems like a crazy, scattered category to me. I think it should be for items taken with a cell phone, otherwise should just submit it under the regular categories.
There are a lot of cool shots in there but just as many that i wonder how they even were accepted. They certainly wouldn't have under the regular submission categories. I'm gonna try a mobile isolated tomatoe and see how it goes. Maybe rework some or my rejects. Most of them would fit in that category from what I see.
I want some of those guaranteed sales. lol.

Yeah, it's a hard look to define. To me it looks like the old polaroid, pinhole or holga photos that were hot some years ago. Somewhat vintage, somewhat grainy, off-color, often blurry, they evoke a feeling that is also hard to define. MTV, Starbucks, Burberry and Nike have used this look in their advertising. Everything old is new again, or is that a song title? Here are some other uses - Instagram Brand Campaigns

I dunno how successful the mobile category really is for microstock. I only deal here.
Having a look at it sorted by bestselling it appears that the first bunch (100+) are mostly/all assignment winners and then it does a nose dive to 21 downloads and rapidly decreases in sales per image from there.

The brand campaigns page you linked to shows phone shots as very hot with countless thousands and thousands of people submitting images but it seems to me the folks who are running these campaigns are really just gathering these photos for their own use for free (or near free). I'm sure that anyone who is submitting to these contests and invites has to release their photos. I know I had to when i entered such a promotional contest.
No money for us there.

Who knows though, if designers for smaller companies/businesses are also looking for this style, might be worth trying some of those mobile styled shots.
And yes, I see they're hard to find in here unless you know where to look.

Be careful with the filters boys and girls!
If you're trying to get that instagrammy, holgy, lomo look with them you might be in for some heartbreak.
Your acceptance ratio might drop.
I gave it a try and my experiment seems to be hurting me.
Some get thru, many don't.
Beyond marking the photo as category abstract/mobile I wonder if explicitly adding a comment to reviewer saying is a mobile style shot would help.
Dunno.
Or maybe i'm just not "getting" the mobile theme.

Not complaining, just a heads up gang.
Truth be told. Anyone can create the look from a good photo.
