I saw this video clip on msnbc from the today show clip from MSNBC, was very interesting regarding stock sites and stock photos
Here
on the side where it says "today show videos" click on the one that says: "Hey wasnt that guy in another ad".
This talked about how the same guy was in an ad for MetLife and also in an ad for viagra. Was kind of interesting.
They show some stock images and talk about using stock sites, was just wondering if anyones image was there?
just wanted to pass this on to my fellowing photographers.
have a great day

There was a similar article in the Wall Street Journal a few days ago
When Marketers See Double
I took it as another reason buyers should buy the rights outright to my images :-)
Honestly though, the thing that made me nervous about the WSJ article is that it appears some of these larger firms are buying royalty free images and creating a library for their own use that they can return to for marketing campaigns and web sites over and over. Not sure how I feel about that. I wonder how they track their usage to ensure they are only doing production runs as alloted by the TOS of each individual agency that the images were licensed from.
For the moment, I'm going to let my agent worry about that stuff :-) |

Great links and info, thanks.
My hope is that this situation will encourage companies to buy the exclusive rights to a photo, still far less expensive than hiring a photog and models to
do a shoot.
But, likely it will still continue to some extent. . . a friend does marketing development for a large firm and recently used some stock photos ( from another agency, much to my dismay!). A few weeks later we saw one of the
same photos on the back of a magazine as a concept photo for a very different industry.
I asked him if that would've prevented him from using it in his ad and
he said, "No, totally different target market" |

Needless to say that these errors (2 companies using the same image in their adds) should encourage big companies to buy images that were not purchased before and even buy them with the SR license, which would secure usage only on their part and prevent other competitors from aiming to the same image. |

This raises another interesting question relating to pricing of the SR license. The default SR price on DT increases the more an image has sold as RF, however, it may be the case (based on the experiences above) that an image is more desirable to a company if it has not been sold before.....the higher prices may actually be more applicable to images which are exclusive to DT, but have not yet sold.

This is a controvercy from back in the days when Royalty Free first appeared, just that the ones that did it do not really understand the difference between RM and RF. I don't think they really know what's that...
Buyers should be aware (and more of them are) of the risks involved when buying a popular RF image. The SR-EL license does solve this issue but only if the file is new. Otherwise, the exclusivity is not applied retroactively. |
