In response to a request for more info about cicadas from Achilles I'm posting this link:

http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/health/bal-te.cicada26may26,0,6650225.story?coll=bal-home-headlines

It will take you to a story that ran in our local paper a few days ago. Also on the page are links to more info. There are an awful lot of them in our region right now but not really as annoying as you might think. The noise is worst in the heat of the afternoon and dies down at night. Some people say they are a very good source of protein but I am going to pass on eating them. But dogs, cats, birds, squirels etc. are feasting on them.

Regards, Harvey

Very interesting article, thanks for sharing. One question though, do they appear once in 17 years, or you can find them during each summer?

There was a story on the news last night about deep frying them. Actually showed some one eating them. I couldn't eat the rest of the evening!

eating them?....ooh, yuck.

So this phenomenon is to be found every 17 years throughout the States or each year they appear on certain places (after a 17 years pause) ?

I heard a news report about a man who had eaten them and gotten a severe shellfish reaction and had to be taken to the hospital. Apparently he's allergic to crab and lobster and it never occurred to him that these might give him the same reaction.

I would assume this happens throughout the States. They haven't shown in Cleveland yet, but are predicted for later this summer. I'm sure they come out at different times through out the country due to different weather. They are mostly in the south at present.

They don't occur in every part of the country. The current infestation is confined to about 4 states in the Mid-Atlantic coastal region. It's called Brood X, the X being the roman numeral for ten. This brood contains three species with three distinct songs which you can differentiate some of the time. I believe there is another brood in the deep south that surfaces every 13 yrs.

Good info! Thanks for the correction. Hopefully I won't have to watch people munching on deep fried cicadas here in Ohio for quite a while!!

Just promise me you don't visit those cicada restaurants.... :)

It would be fun to see a picture with all of you sitting at a restaurant table, maybe 3 pics because all of you have cameras and see which one will have most downloads :)

I was just in your area this morning at my regular job. Pull my e-mail off my profile and maybe we can make plans to get together. I think Achilles should take the group photo, though!

David, I wish I come and take your photo but is a long way from here. Maybe on the next trip :)

PS: I emailed your address to Ron, it is not public on the site because of spam crawlers (we all hate them!!!).

I just glanced through your portfolio David. I think I have a shot of the same steel coils you have in your portfolio. Mine is at a different angle and I don't have it on dreamstime but, tell me if I am right. Did you take that shot by the railroad tracks next to the dollar paradise store?
