The “why not” factor
I had been taking photographs (or should I say snaps) seriously for about a year and I was quite pleased with myself. But there was always a slight niggling feeling that there was more to be done. One night I went on-line on the Internet and while researching some particular photography technique came across the concept of micro-stock. And after researching a little bit more “Why not?” popped up in my head.
After almost exactly 3 years, my approval rating is climbing (ok it is inching upwards rather than leaping, but it is still progress) and sales have become a little more frequent. I have almost earned $1,000 and I hope I can truly say that my photography has improved considerably.
Just to give you an idea of the progress made in 3 years. Every time one of my photographs was bought I used to jump around with excitement, and now when there is a day when my earnings do not increase from the previous day’s balance I am disappointed. I actually expect to sell at least one photograph a day, as opposed to before when I was actually surprised that I had sold anything at all.
“Why not?” really worked out for me in this case. Or rather it was the answer to the question that really did the trick. Instead of saying “Because people will judge my pictures” or “Because I’m not good enough” or “Because it’s a waste of time”… I just answered “Absolutely, why the hell not. There’s nothing to lose and there may even be something to gain”.
