A word of encouragement

Recently one of our DT members asked me “out of curiosity: why are you so active in the forum but have a small portfolio. . . . . .”

A good question.

Georges' observation is very true. I have been on DT for 6 months and do actively take part in most of the forums and do write blogs at times.

It is good to interact with the other members. It also improves the chance of your uploads getting noticed one way or the other.

I will give you an example.

There is this Free Discussion (on Dreamstime message board) in which there is a topic named Nice

What one has to do is pick up a picture from the person’s portfolio that has posted before you.

After I took part and did my job, the next person (Nobilior) posted my picture of the Antique Cannon

(Message posted at 10/04/2010, 12:39:19 PM by Nobilior)

Immediately after that on the same day (4th Oct) there was a sale for me. And it was none other than the Antique Cannon (the price listed as 5 credits. Resolution – Large)

Was this a coincidence that the dates matched ? Maybe. Or maybe some one happened to see it on the forum and decided to buy it. My strong belief is that some one noticed it.

I do also browse through the latest additions that take place on DT. People who have freshly joined and are having just 1 or 2 or 3 uploads but with no sales so far. I put a positive comment on their picture and send it to them. This will boost their morale and encourage them to add more pictures.

After all we don’t loose anything by giving an unknown person a word of encouragement, do we ?

Hey Joe, glad to see your latest blogs.... as long as you are not in this for the money whatsoever, then post and blog away ....otherwise time is money, and I am pretty sure the time spent posting and blogging doesn't balance well with microstock sales from a small portfolio.... my own DT sales were weak for years until I recently decided to go for it and beef up my portfolio with many new images I thought really had a good chance ... since then I've cashed out payments eight times. I don't mean to be negative, I just think the time spent typing blogs and forum posts could be much better spent shooting or creating images, which will ultimately lead to many, many more DL's than "social networking" will. Then you can sit back and watch the DL's stack up and post or blog about the success of your enlarged portfolio :-)

Hey Joe, i think that's right. i'm new to DT and to stock photography. one of the things that drew me to it was how interactive the discussions are. The way how DT nurtures and helps new people with their portfolios.

Hey Joe. I agree with Cteconsulting 100%. Its the people here in these forums that make DT so wonderful and their opinions and suggestions are all sincere. Dont let the "r's" get to you, forget em like I , for one, learned to do. Remember that DT is one of the hardest stocks to get into to, they expect alot from their contributors. I have a small port here and alot of "Rs"BUT when I get lucky and I get one accepted I know it had to be good. Best advice for the "r,s" is move em and dont get discouraged by them.

India's culture would be interesting, current events and architecture and children.

Best to you Joe!

You have a nice portfolio Joe, I too have a small portfolio and just an amateur learning. Have met such a lot of nice people that encourage you on this site and have learned a lot since I joined. I wish you many uploads and many sales. :)

I am on most of the other microstock sites, and DT is the ONLY site that I enjoy participating with the forum. The contributors here are friendly and there is a true sense of community here at DT.

It`s so true what you are saying in your blog, but still I feel sorry because you don`t upload some more pictures! The ones you already have in your portfolio look great, so you should, maybe, push it harder and get some new pictures here :)
Helping other people is definitely a good think to do, and I salute that...but still, please upload some more :)
Thank you for your nice blog!
