Portraits while travelling

In recent travels I've been making an effort to take portraits of the people I meet.At first I set a goal of 50 different people per trip however, this seemed to cheapen the individual interactions as I'd have to bounce from person to person during any available time. I'm now just making the most of any opportunity and making a habit of at least having my 50mm lens with me everywhere I go.I love the environmental portrait work of the greats like Arnold Newman, Steve McCurry, Henri Cartier-... continue reading

Making the most of a wet night ...

I was returning to my hotel on the last night of a recent trip to Brasilia, Brazil's capital. I had been banking on using this night to go and shoot however it was raining hard. That morning I'd told the taxi driver that I wanted to shoot a couple of places so he was still keen. I did not have a rain coat or umbrella so at best it was not going to be wet. I told the driver that I wouldn't bother. Then when we got near the hotel I thought stuff it, may as well. I gathered my gear... continue reading

Merry Christmas and Christmas Lights

It is great seeing a familiar city dressed up in Christmas lights. I had just the pleasure this past week in Salt Lake City and Vancouver. Unfortunately Vancouver's weather didn't leave many options to shoot however SLC had a few good evenings. There are a number of places around town with impressive setups however none quite like the Temple. The Grand American hotel also has some impressive lights in the court yardI took the following from the grounds there one evening while on a work trip:... continue reading

Hyderabad a city worth visiting ... Some ideas

Encounters of amazing diversity and great experiences featured in a recent couple of trips to Hyderabad in India. I traveled there on both occasions for work and stayed at an amazing hotel in the IT zone called Mindspace. The office was a short walk from the hotel and eating places were close.During my first trip I was fortunate to have a colleague show me an amazing site called Charminar at sunrise in the downtown area. Charminar was build in 1591 and means 4 towers when translated,... continue reading

Frog in the bathroom ...

On a recent work trip I opted to leave the toliet for Sebastian, a Green Tree Frog who I named after it seemed he wasn't hopping away. He spent his time either right in the bowl itself or under the rim. I found moths around the outdoor lights which he gladly ate in exchange for some very natural and capable modeling. The arrangement meant that I was not able to use my toliet but was a small price to pay for some of the shots I was able to get.I had with me a flash head and cord as well as an... continue reading

Not making basic mistakes ... Some thoughts ...

In the absence of much time to develop my shooting style of late I have been conscientiously trying to not make basic mistakes!Basic things that I have been trying NOT to do include:Arriving somewhere with no battery (now check the battery indicator before heading out)A full CF card (no a preview and check available shots before heading out)Fumbling around looking for my lens cap (always put it in my left front pocket)Forgetting to pack my tripod head or entire tripod (general awareness)... continue reading

How to recover images from corrupt card .... Essential tool

I thought I should share another lesson I learnt this week past.I was helping shoot some stills around a friends commercial film from morning until lunch on Saturday. I then went to download what I had, around 400 images, when my laptop registered that the card was unreadable. I pulled the card reader and reinserted into the USB port and this time it could read. On navigating to the folder though it registered only two strangely named files and none of the CR2 raw Canon images I'd been shooting.... continue reading

500 online ... Happy day

It has been an interesting journey but am now proud to say that I have 500 online. It has been a great process of learning what is deemed of sufficient quality and relevant to the market. I have some early macro images of the usual bugs and bees that certainly aren't the big sellers but as I enjoy those I still take them for myself and not dreamstime (which I'm learning is totally acceptable). My most successful images as it turns out are those that I've taken while on work trips and happened to have... continue reading

Brisbane city at night ...

I had a sleepless night a few weeks back in Brisbane and as the family was away I was able to check out a few spots I'd been wanting to visit in the city center for night shots with river reflections. It turned out surprisingly successful, especially given the amount of traffic on the river on Friday night with party boats going up and down with all their garish lights - great for light trails.I found a couple of look outs that created good places to shoot from and others under the Story Bridge... continue reading

Wildlife in Namib desert in Namibia

A recent trip took me to Swakopmund on the coast of Namibia for a week of work. At the end of our last day a group was able to visit the Namib Desert on an eco-focused tour in the form of a custom 4 hour trip. The thing that became apparent is how "lucky" you can be when you are with experienced people who really know the terrain. Our guide had over 20yrs experience and it was great as when you are guided you -1. Don't get lost2. See much more than you otherwise would3. Can get around... continue reading
