New release templates

We are launching new and improved versions of our branded model and property release forms. The updating process is necessary, because the now outdated documents did make clear all the information we legally require from the signing parties on the present day.It has been several years since the last update and we felt we must address the increased legal needs and that we could present the information more comprehensively and logically, plus throw in a few bonus features. Please let me walk you... continue reading

Houses falling over

The title of this blog could collectively describe the majority of architectural photographic experiments that we receive every day. And the problem can be clearly understood by any of us, who has ever tried to get a building into the frame. The bigger the building - the bigger the problem. And this is exactly the core of ill-looking architectural shots - we, and our cameras are so small compared to what we want to photograph. We have to step back quite a bit to get all into the frame we want,... continue reading

You would never guess, what is copyrighted these days...

Copyright issues are one of the most confusing and frustrating among contributors in today's dynamic and profit-driven world. Where ever there is some new architectural structure or a new product or even word of speech - there is always someone who wants and has it protected from unlicensed use. Believe me, it makes you feel that just about ANYTHING can, under circumstances, be copyrighted these days and the vision of a free world and free speech is a daydream. You have to be cautious when you... continue reading

Whitespace that should not be white

Much talk has been about whitespace or copyspace in images - designers prefer it and photographers like to emphasize their subjects with it.HOWEVERWhitespace should not be white. Why? Because if it is white, it is just empty. Empty space that makes the file (look) big, but in reality only makes the designers pay more for nothing. If you isolate your shots, then you should crop tightly around it, making the image as big as actual information in the image and not more. It seriously is not fun... continue reading

Cropping - old issue, still ignored by most

We keep getting emails from buyers where they complain about poor cropping of images. Not poor compositions, but poor cropping in regards for file usability. We were asked to pass the following comment directly to our community —Received by feedback form on the site:I love your site and I've been using it for over 2 years now. Here's my comment - please tell all your wonderful photographers to PLEASE STOP cropping their photos. I can't tell you how many photos that I've... continue reading

Expensive lens - still soft images!?

Recently I have started to notice that we get an increasing number of product and people shots that are NOT out of focus, but are kind of soft anyway. As the review tool shows conveniently the EXIF of the photograph, a correlation started to emerge. Namely, the correlation between the aperture and softness of the image. Now, most of you would think that - yes, but of course, the wider the aperture the softer the image and the shallower given depth of field. Right you are, but interestingly the... continue reading

The significance of the Illustration categories

As a daily reviewer I have come across, and recently even more so, tons of illustrations with misplaced or even unassigned Illustration categories. I'd like to share a few words about the significance of those categories and why it is necessary to assign them correctly. It is required that contributors assign one of the three illustration categories to their submissions that are not photographs. Even if you do not select any additional categories, selecting the one Illustration category is... continue reading

Too many...insects, and more generally about Macro photography

Pursuing the objects in the "macro world" is among the first attempts to enter the amateur photography craft. As soon as people discover the power of magnification the macro-modes the point-and-shoot cameras provide them, they usually are so appalled by the new possibilities and viewpoint of the environment around us, that they more often than not tend to forget all good guidelines of successful photography that they would otherwise abide to. "Newbies" often fall for the sheer... continue reading
