Besides photography I am a writer so with the advent of self publishing through Amazon I decided to put out some novels and short stories. The process is very much "do it yourself" from typing, to layout, to cover design. So I have taken on the role of designer for the books and it has been fun to look at photographs for cover illustration from a different point of view. The first book I did was fairly easy since I knew where I wanted the cover photo to be from and I kew it when I saw it. Short stories... continue reading

December turned into quite an exciting month for me here at Dreamstime and as a photographer. First, I went Exclusive and if you've been thinking about it I highly recommend it. I am having a sale a day, minimum, since going Exclusive and when I search for my photos they are way higher up in the searches!Second, I got my first pay out. No, I'm not going to get rich doing this but it was fun to get my first check just in time for tax season. And finally, I bought a new camera. After using a... continue reading
I did it, signed up to go Exclusive with Dreamstime and got accepted! I had tried another agency and despite having lots of photos accepted I wasn't making any sales. So I did it and immediatley got few bucks for my uploads, and made my first Exclusive sale. Plus I have a couple Level 2 images. Pretty exciting. Now I am working on all the good advice I've been reading in the blogs and putting together collections and trying some new techniques. Next step is to ask for my first payout.Fun times... continue reading
I don't consider myself a studio photographer, in fact I struggle with indoor lighting and really admire the work of those of you who do such amazing studio photographs. But I live the Pacific Northwest of the US and it really isdark and rainy for about seven months a year (some would say nine but I'm an optimist). While I thrive on a blue sky and the opportunity to drive around looking for interesting stuff to shoot I am now once again facing the inevitable need to shoot indoors.Ironically,... continue reading
Last evening I went to a friend's massage business to shoot their first anniversary party. It was a great time with lots of nice people, great food and beer.On the way home I decided to stop by a beach and shoot the sunset for a project I'm working on. And, as you may know, the sunset takes awhile, but I found the time spent standing on the boardwalk very productive. I took the time to think about some relationships, past and present, and really contemplate what happened and what might. I really... continue reading
I love taking photographs and spend lots of time checking the weather and looking for fun places to go in search of subjects. And that is perhaps the best part about being a photographer, having a wonderful excuse to go places and check out new events just because it might be a great shoot.Last weekend I decided to go down to the beach just to see what might be lurking about and found an avid group of fishermen trying to catch the last of seasonal salmon run. I talked to lots of them, followed... continue reading
I started shooting pictures in college back in the day when you used a light meter, everything on the camera was manual and post processing consisted of a bit of dodging and burning on the enlarger. Needless to say the move to digital has been full of learning curves, mostly figuring out what all the camera can do and how to make adjustments to have it do what I want. The one bit of advice I have is not to be afraid to go back to manual. Just because the camera and it's little micro chips can make... continue reading
I was in a really bad accident last week, literally run over by a 19 foot U Haul. I don't blog about this for sympathy but here it is summer, great weather and I am stuck in the house healing, and obsessing about all the great photo ops I missed during my accident and 7 hours in the ER.Firemen, cops, ambulances, stretchers, CTs, x-rays, IVs--all the medical paraphernalia I don't have access to photograph on a regular basis! Seriously not fair. I would have days of post processing and uploading... continue reading
