Tips for video with mobile phones

So you’re thinking of submitting videos for stock, or have already been doing so but would like a few pointers? The good news is that you don’t need an expensive digital SLR or dedicated video camera. These days, even a good mobile phone will record up to 4K video and allow you to shoot some stunning video footage. As a video reviewer, I’d like to share a few tips which will help you in terms of having your videos accepted rather than refused.  One of the most common refusal reasons I... continue reading

Poor background removal - is this refusal bugging you?

"Poor background removal" - if this is a refusal reason that you commonly receive when your images are reviewed, especially on subjects that have a plain (often white) background, here are a few tips that I hope you will find helpful. If you intend to "cut out" your subject matter and place it on a white background, you need to make sure the background is actually white. And the edges of your subject need to look realistic - often they have the appearance of being cut out with scissors because... continue reading

Adding a sense of scale

I love to shoot landscapes - I'm fortunate in that I currently live in a very scenic Australian State where landscape photography is a must.At times, it's difficult to convey a sense of scale with an image - I know the depth and breadth and height because I can see it with my eyes, but I can't necessarily convey that to someone who is viewing my photo. One technique to give your images a sense of scale is to bring people into them, because people give us a familiar point of reference - we know... continue reading

First year on Dreamstime

So, I've just hit a year on Dreamstime, and what a year it's been! After being exclusive on another agency for over 7 years, it was a huge decision for me to change over, but I have been most pleasantly surprised with the subsequent sales here for my first year.I've really enjoyed getting to know the staff and fellow contributors on DT, it is a wonderful place to share and learn and a very happy community to be a part of.I have no regrets whatsoever in making that big decision to change over,... continue reading

Recycling your images

Do you ever stare at your image files on the computer screen and think that while they're "okay", perhaps they could be better? Or do you ever suffer from the photographer's version of Writer's Block and can't find anything to shoot?I sometimes study my images and try to come up with a way to make the not-so-special shot a bit more interesting - here's where recycling comes in. For me, recycling usually involves arranging a composite by utilizing elements of more than one image. This came... continue reading

First Editors Choice!

After viewing some of the excellent images that have received an Editor's Choice over the past months, I'm very happy to say that I finally received an Editor's Choice for one of my images! :)Having always been an avid reader myself, I wanted to create an image that would encourage children to enjoy books and reading and getting something special out of a story. Hopefully this image will convey that reading really can be something special! continue reading

Make your images pop with blending modes

If you're like me, sometimes what comes out of your camera and onto your monitor isn't quite what you had in mind when you took the photo. Sometimes the image might look a bit flat or dull, despite playing with curves or levels in Photoshop.Have you ever tried the blending modes? They can really add something dynamic to an image. So where do you find blending modes? When you open an image in Photoshop, you'll automatically have a background layer in the Layers palette. You won't see the blending... continue reading

Dreamstime growth

I became a contributor here at DT in Dec 2010...actually, I started uploading in Nov 2010 "behind the scenes" while I waited for my exclusivity with another agency to come to an end...so my PF wasn't visible until the beginning of December. In February 2011 I decided to become exclusive, and it has been a wonderful decision. It took 10 days for my first sale...and the sales from there have been slowly accumulating, with each month getting better than the previous one! Some milestones to share... continue reading

Shooting animals

And by shooting, of course I mean, photographing :)Animals have been a passion of mine ever since I can remember...I grew up with all manner of pets, including cats, dogs, rabbits, mice, frogs, fish, horses, lizards, pigeons, budgies...we even had pet eels and as a child I loved sitting by the pond, feeling them glide lazily through my fingers. These days I continue to share my life with animals…my current whippet and I go to the local nursing home on a weekly basis to visit the elderly residents... continue reading
