I've rarely gotten assignment photos accepted so I almost didn't bother the other day when I saw the latest one. It was the last possible day to upload one but I figured I'd give it a try and I got this one accepted. I'm excited and hoping it will get some votes now that it's in there. There are some excellent photos for the latest concept and others with First Date as the first encounter theme so the competition is tough.I wish I could have uploaded editorial photos too - I had people shaking... continue reading

It's time to get out and shoot some Halloween photos if you haven't already. I'm heading to the farmer's market tomorrow to get some pumpkins, gourds, Indian corn and mums, and planning some shoots for next week on my friend Sarah's front porch. Her house was built in the 1700's - really old in this neck of the woods. I thought I 'd share some of my older work both for Halloween and the fall season here just because as photographers, graphic artists and designers we love taking, manipulating and drawing... continue reading
Designers always need backgrounds and I thought this was the perfect time of year to put together a public collection of soft abstract spring backgrounds and so I'm asking you all to suggest images to include.I'm looking for images that say spring time - bright or pastel abstracts with lots of copy space that designers can use on websites or as backgrounds for other images. Colors like blue, pink, purple, green and yellow with a happy abstract feel - textures and patterns appropriate for the... continue reading
From time to time I enter the various assignment contests here, usually adding anywhere from one to a handful of photos. Much of the time, they are rejected because the editors were looking for "something a little more elaborate." A couple have made it, but my track record is such that I only enter with some trepidation. Then came the smartphone assignment contest. I've been using my iPhone a lot and absolutely love having a camera with me all the time. I sometimes use it to take a few photos even... continue reading
I haven't checked my stats in a while and went on today and saw that I just made my 300th sale. Right on the nose. It was this photo which just made Level 4:This summer, I caught up on a project I started ages ago, making contact sheets from my various shoots and keeping track of which images sell best - and where different images sell best. This image, and a group of similar backgrounds I shot with my lensbaby when I first got it, have been big sellers for me here on Dreamstime and elsewhere.... continue reading
I was reviewing my stats for November and realized my first sale last month was my 200th sale on Dreamstime.A few nautical images among last month's sales (lately my best-selling category) including these:but seasonal photos were the biggest sellers - such as these representing autumn:winter/Christmas:and New Year's Eve:What struck me as funny was that this New Year's Eve photo has had 365 views - exactly one for every day of the past year :)Many were first time sales,... continue reading
I was reviewing my portfolios on various sites to see which images were working best for me and clearly it's my nautical images. Lighthouses have been an especially good subject for me, and along with boats and other images of the sea, they account for over half my total stock photo sales.I found this one from Nantucket in a slide show on the site of Budget Travel magazine for September licensed from Dreamstime in an article called Charming Fall Islands. It's no. 13 in the slideshowOther... continue reading
In January I had my 100th sale on DT, got a payout, and had 99 photos on DT. Planned , to easily make it an even 100.Well... I'm getting another payout and had close to 100 more sales here, but I've been so busy I didn't upload much ...anywhere. Couple of rejects, then uploaded one photo before I went away (more on that later) - and now I have exactly 100 photos on DT to coincide with another payout.I can't help thinking how regular payouts would be if I uploaded regularly. I spendway... continue reading
BME! And I didn't even realize it until DT tweeted for me!The month started out really slow for me. After the first two weeks I thought it was going to be my worst month rather than my best but then late last week sales began to pick up. Quite a relief! Here are some of the images that made this the best month ever on DT for me:These three level threes all sold multiple times this month:(appropriate for grads trying to figure out what to do with their lives)(this abstract is getting... continue reading
I've been submitting stock photos for a while now but didn't really start adding to my portfolio until late last year, and once I began submitting regularly I saw a big jump in sales.I've found it helpful to join a few forums includingthis one to learn more about stock and share encouraging stories as well as struggles. DT certainly has a great community and it's been a big help as I grow my stock photography portfolio.Last week, I was interviewed about my stock photo sales - including my latest... continue reading
