We've all heard of it, the "it factor".A quick online search and it is described as an indefinable something that makes someone special. I'd never given it much thought......until a recent neighborhood gathering. There were lots of new people to meet, and as a "baby" photographer I'm always interested in meeting young families. There were plenty of babies at this particular event, all of them adorable, sweet and beautiful. But one little guy stood out from the rest.... continue reading

It's been exactly five months since I wrote a blog ( Adventures in baby photography part 1 ) about my newly found interest in the art of photographing newborn babies. My hopes were that maybe I hadfound my niche as a photographer. However at that time, almost half a year ago, I had yet to photograph a single newborn! Through word of mouth, facebook, family and friends, I found my first little model quickly and I have photographed over a dozen babies since then.I would like to share with... continue reading
As photographers we've all been told we need to find our "niche". I've been trying very hard to find that "niche" for quite some time now.For a while I thought it was food, then I went through what I call my "puppy phase". (I wrote a couple of articles on that, here on the Dreamstime blog) That was a certainly a fun and profitable adventure. Then three months ago, I was asked to photograph a three month old boy. I'll be honest and say I really wasn't prepared.... continue reading
Since becoming a fulltime stock photographer I have been inundated with requests from family and friends to photograph them, their pets, their homes etc. Most of the time these shoots are a fun way to do something nice for the people I care about, as well as provide me with a great opportunity to expand my portfolio. However there is one request that I have always turned down with a very definite no, and that is weddings.I find it frustrating when a young 'bride to be', (one who's spent a small... continue reading

I've done a lot of pet photography but this was my first chance at shooting a litter of puppies. The breeder had invited me into her home and although I would have much preferred to shoot in my own studio, I understood her concerns about taking the puppies out of their environment. For the first shoot the puppies were only three weeks old, their eyes were barely open and they weren't moving too quickly yet. We set up in the large kitchen on the counter and I was able to get some great isolations.... continue reading
Anyone can point a camera at their pet and take a snapshot, but if you want an image that will get accepted here at Dreamstime and will sell well, you need to put in a little more effort. Here are a few simple rules to help get you started.1. Get down to their eye level. Simple, you've probably heard it before, it really makes a world of difference.2. Patience Patience Patience! It really takes time, some of my best selling pet images required an hour or more of shooting in order to get... continue reading
